Position Overview

Are you interested in delivering Speech and Language Therapy for individuals undergoing awake craniotomy procedures? This role offers a unique opportunity to collaborate within a neuro-oncology multidisciplinary team (MDT). We are seeking a dedicated professional to join our awake craniotomy team, engaging in outpatient SLT clinics, acute surgical wards, neuro-oncology MDT clinics, and operating theatres.

Our team is large yet closely connected, comprising highly skilled professionals who contribute to a robust supervision framework. We actively promote innovation, research participation, and clinical/professional development. Additionally, we have established SLT-led Videofluoroscopy and FEES services, providing opportunities to utilize these instrumental assessments to enhance your clinical practice.

Key Responsibilities

The selected candidate will be part of the Speech and Language Therapy team at our institution, managing a diverse clinical caseload across both outpatient and inpatient environments. You will collaborate closely with the neuro-oncology MDT to ensure high-quality care for our patient population.

The ideal candidate will demonstrate a strong commitment to assessing and managing swallowing and communication disorders within the neuro-oncology patient group. Your responsibilities will encompass:

  • Evaluating and managing patients with communication and swallowing disorders in both outpatient and inpatient settings.
  • Collaborating with the neuro-oncology MDT to develop language mapping strategies for awake craniotomy procedures.
  • Actively participating in specialist MDT clinics.
  • Engaging in service development and audit activities.
  • Providing training to junior colleagues and students.
  • Adapting to a dynamic and fast-paced work environment.

Qualifications and Experience

Essential Qualifications:

  • A good standard of secondary education, including A-Level or equivalent.
  • BSc or recognized MSc degree in Speech and Language Therapy.
  • Membership of RCSLT.
  • Registration with HCPC.
  • Completion of RCSLT Level C/Level 5 EDS dysphagia competencies (or above).
  • Willingness and capability to achieve FEES interpretation and scoping competencies.

Essential Experience:

  • Significant experience working independently with an adult dysphagia caseload at a specialist level.
  • Experience with a neurosurgery and neuro-oncology caseload.
  • Experience working independently in acute hospital and outpatient settings.
  • Proven ability to work effectively as part of a multidisciplinary team.
  • Evidence of ongoing professional development through courses and conferences.
  • Experience in training Speech and Language Therapy undergraduates and junior SLTs.
