The Role: Play Therapist

We are seeking a compassionate and experienced Play Therapist to join our team at our refuge in South Hampshire. This is a fixed-term contract for 12 months, offering the opportunity to make a real difference in the lives of vulnerable children.

Your Responsibilities:

  • Deliver person-centered, age-appropriate, strengths-based play therapy to children and young people affected by domestic abuse.
  • Conduct therapeutic assessments to determine the needs of each child and their suitability for play therapy.
  • Plan and provide individual and group play therapy sessions using a variety of techniques, including storytelling, art, drama, music, and role-play.
  • Measure the progress and effectiveness of interventions throughout the therapeutic process.
  • Encourage co-production with children and young people by actively seeking their views and incorporating their ideas into service provision.
  • Collaborate with other professionals, such as mental health teams and social workers, to ensure holistic support for families.

Your Skills and Experience:

  • Degree-level education in a relevant field (e.g., psychology, counselling, play therapy).
  • Registration with an appropriate professional organization (e.g., UKCP, BACP, HCPC).
  • Demonstrable experience providing outcomes-focused therapy to children and young people.
  • Strong understanding of child development theories and attachment.
  • Experience organizing and delivering engaging play activities for children.
  • In-depth knowledge of the impact of domestic abuse on children and young people.
  • Ability to work non-judgmentally and recognize the diverse needs of children.
  • Commitment to safeguarding and child protection principles.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, enabling you to build strong relationships with women and their children while maintaining professional boundaries.
