About the Role

We are seeking a highly skilled Senior Design Engineer to join our Engineering Services team at Network Rail. As a key member of our team, you will be responsible for the engineering development of allocated proposals from clarification of remit to project completion.

Key Responsibilities
  • Manage the development remit for a proposal to ensure it properly describes the engineering requirements, scope, possibilities, and operational performance targets.
  • Develop and manage engineering solutions to proposals to best satisfy the business case.
  • Manage all engineering and development activities to result in schemes that are affordable, meet programme requirements, and are safe and environmentally responsible.
  • Manage the development of suitable engineering options for a proposal, considering safety, reliability, operational capacity modeling, maintainability, ease of construction, and environmental/whole life issues.
  • Secure all relevant base data, review compliance with appropriate standards, and use risk ID and evaluation methods to evaluate and compare options.
  • Monitor that designers are up to date via training, briefings, etc.
  • Confirm whether strict change control is maintained on scope development and evaluate cost, time, and performance impacts in conjunction with project management.
  • Participate in the selection of a single option for further development and prepare or monitor preparation of reports, papers, etc., as necessary.
  • Manage the development of the selected single option and prepare the full engineering data package required for commencement of the detailed design.
  • Discharge the construction design management (CDM) 'Designer' duties as required and carry out or monitor cross-discipline engineering checks of all relevant aspects of the proposal.
  • Carry out independent checking of safety-critical signaling design documentation.
Requirements
  • An engineering degree or equivalent industry-recognized training qualification.
  • A demonstrable aptitude for option development.
  • Strong evaluation and decision-making skills.
  • A working knowledge of rail engineering and relevant successful experience working in a principal discipline.
  • An ability to work and communicate effectively in a team context.
  • An appreciation of all the life cycle stages of rail infrastructure.
  • CDM, auditing, and risk assessment competencies.
  • Experience of acting in the role of Contractor's Engineering Manager (CEM) for PACE stages 0 to 2.
  • Chartered membership of a relevant professional engineering institution.
Desirable
  • Six Sigma Yellow Belt.
  • Experience in design, installation, and maintenance.
  • Formal qualifications in risk identification and assessment.
