Job Title: Lead Theatre Practitioner - Anaesthetics

Location: Fortius Clinic London and Fortius Surgical Centre

Contract type: Permanent full-time

Key Responsibilities:
  • Manage the anaesthetic department and theatre portering service.
  • Assess, plan, deliver, and evaluate high-quality pre, peri, and post-operative care, resource management, and ensure the department meets CQC standards.
  • Manage and ensure the provision of nursing care, maintaining high clinical standards, and working in a multi-disciplinary team.
  • Exercise accountability as set out in the NMC/ HCPC Code of Professional Conduct.
  • Manage and lead the Anaesthetic service on a continual basis, managing theatre porters, and supporting Ward Managers, Theatre Suite, and Enhanced Care Unit.
  • Provide leadership, management, supervision, and support to the team.
  • Assist in planning and delivering individualised, safe, effective, and evidence-based patient care.
  • Maintain equipment asset register and ensure maintenance.
  • Contribute to effective budget management of the departmental clinical area.
  • Assist the Head of Theatres and/or Deputy Head of Theatres in the business planning process.
  • Orientate new staff, including bank and agency, to the department.
  • Report mechanical problems in line with Hospital Policy and arrange for repair or replacement.
  • Participate in annual appraisals and deliver objectives from appraisals or service improvement projects.
  • Perform one-to-ones within the team, identifying issues or risk areas via the appropriate escalation path.
  • Ensure a culture of safety and responsiveness, investigating all incidents and complaints, sharing lessons learned and action plans.
  • Undertake mentoring of staff and performance review appraisals.
  • Support, supervise, and delegate clinical tasks to the anaesthetic team.
  • Undertake risk assessments in accordance with Hospital policies and standards.
  • Ensure compliance with mandatory and professional training.
  • Attend and actively participate in relevant committees in the Hospital.
  • Deliver governance standards in line with the Hospital's Governance framework.
  • Audit quality of care to improve service and maintain standards.
  • Deliver a high level of anaesthetic care for patients within the Theatre.
  • Work with the Recovery and Enhanced Care team to deliver high-quality patient care.
  • Participate in education, training, and development of other staff.
  • Ensure all equipment is checked prior to use and report faults immediately.
  • Help prevent cross-infection by observing departmental policy.
  • Provide initial urgent or emergency care as required.
  • Maintain confidentiality in accordance with the Data Protection Act.
  • Maintain safe custody and handling of drugs in accordance with hospital policy.
  • Responsible for policy updates and service development in the department.
  • Follow Fortius policies and SOPs, advocating and teaching them to staff.
  • Report to Head of Theatres and/or Deputy Head of Theatres on improvements affecting clinical or clerical procedures.
  • Liaise with medical colleagues to maximise safety and efficiency.
  • RISK & CLINICAL GOVERNANCE
    • Evaluate/develop Policies and Procedures in line with NICE guidance and educate staff.
    • Ensure knowledge of systems for monitoring and auditing quality standards.
    • Support staff in determining root cause analyses of complaints and incidents.
  • PEOPLE MANAGEMENT
    • Monitor compliance of HR policies and procedures with the support of HR and line manager.
    • Line manage, coach, and develop staff, conducting annual performance appraisals.
    • Manage performance and motivation of directly line managed staff.
    • Assist in recruitment and retention of staff, addressing training and development needs.
    • Process staff return to work, Time off in Lieu, and Annual leave requests.
  • FINANCIAL MANAGEMENT
    • Deploy staff in a cost-effective way, ensuring controls meet performance indicators.
    • Assist in managing service improvement projects within timeframes and targets.
