Position Summary

Reporting directly to the Lead Economist, this role is an exciting opportunity to become part of the MEL Team at LGC Group as an Economist. The MEL team is dedicated to demonstrating and communicating the impact of investments in health and social care research. By generating timely and relevant evidence, the team enables LGC Group to be innovative, responsive, and effective in maximizing this impact.


In this capacity, you will oversee and contribute to various economic impact-related projects within a sector that truly makes a difference. You will utilize your understanding of economic theories and models to assist the Lead Economist in creating systematic methodologies for evaluating the impact and cost-effectiveness of various NIHR expenditures. Your contributions will help generate economic evidence, support strategic goals to demonstrate and communicate the impact of investments in health and social care research, and position LGC Group as a leader in employing economics to monitor, evaluate, and learn from research funding activities.


Key Responsibilities
  • Oversee and contribute to the development of models assessing the economic impact of NIHR.
  • Participate in internal economic evaluations of NIHR funding.
  • Review, validate, and enhance existing economic analyses within the NIHR's expanding impact case study repository.
  • Identify and prepare relevant datasets, perform data analysis, and draft analytical reports on economic indicators of NIHR's impact.
  • Assist in managing commissioned economic impact evaluations of NIHR's research funding.
  • Stay updated with academic literature on the costs and benefits of various research activities, outputs, and outcomes, as well as developments in the health and care research sector.
  • Organize and conduct training sessions on economic concepts and briefings on economic findings for colleagues without an economics background.

Qualifications and Experience

Essential Criteria

  • Master's degree in Economics or a closely related field (e.g., Business Economics, Accounting and Finance) or equivalent experience.
  • Professional experience in health economics.
  • Strong analytical skills and experience in economic and/or statistical modeling using tools such as Microsoft Excel, R, or Python.
  • Proven ability to apply economics creatively to new areas and a willingness to learn about various sub-disciplines of economics.
  • Exceptional written and verbal communication skills, demonstrated through high-level reporting and presentation capabilities.
  • Excellent organizational skills, including effective prioritization and the ability to meet deadlines.
  • Familiarity with HM Treasury's Green Book guidelines.

Desirable Criteria

  • Experience in cost-benefit and/or cost-effectiveness analysis.
  • Experience with economic evaluation projects and labor market analysis.
  • Understanding of research impact and the pathways to achieving it.
  • Experience analyzing research funding.
  • Knowledge of the role of government research funding within the broader context of industrial policy.

This is a hybrid role, with an expectation for all employees to attend the office a minimum of 4 days a month, which may increase based on team requirements.
