Role Summary
Reporting to the Lead Economist, this is an excellent opportunity to become part of the MEL Team at LGC Group as an Economist.
The MEL team is committed to demonstrating and communicating the impact of LGC's investments in health and social care research. By generating timely and relevant evidence, we ensure that our initiatives are innovative, responsive, and effective in maximizing their impact.
In this role, you will oversee and contribute to various economic impact-related projects within a sector that truly makes a difference. You will utilize your understanding of economic theories and models to assist the Lead Economist in developing systematic methodologies to evaluate the impact and cost-effectiveness of LGC's funding activities. Your efforts will support LGC in generating economic evidence, fulfilling strategic objectives, and establishing a leadership position in the application of economics to monitor, evaluate, and learn from research funding activities.
The ideal candidate will possess experience in health economics and economic evaluation, a strong background in economics, and a willingness to expand knowledge in the health and research funding sectors.
Key Responsibilities
- Develop and contribute to models assessing LGC's economic impact
- Participate in internal economic evaluations of LGC funding
- Review, validate, and enhance existing economic analyses within LGC's impact case study repository
- Identify and prepare relevant datasets, conduct data analysis, and produce analytical reports on economic indicators of LGC's impact
- Assist in managing commissioned economic impact evaluations of LGC's research funding
- Stay informed about academic literature regarding the costs and benefits of various research activities and developments in the health and care research sector
- Organize and deliver training on economic concepts and communicate economic findings to non-economist colleagues
Qualifications
Required Qualifications and Experience
- Master's degree in Economics or a closely related field (such as Business Economics or Accounting and Finance), or equivalent experience
- Academic and/or professional experience in health economics
- Proficiency in economic and/or statistical modeling using tools like Microsoft Excel, R, or Python
- Demonstrated ability to apply economics creatively to new areas and a willingness to learn about sub-disciplines of economics
- Strong written and verbal communication skills, evidenced by high-level reporting and presentation capabilities
- Excellent organizational skills, including effective prioritization and the ability to meet deadlines
- Familiarity with HM Treasury's Greenbook guidelines
Desired Qualifications
- Experience in cost-benefit and/or cost-effectiveness analysis
- Background in economic evaluation projects and labor market analysis
- Understanding of research impact and pathways to achieving it
- Experience analyzing research funding
- Insight into the role of government research funding within the broader context of industrial policy
