About the Role

We are seeking a highly skilled and motivated Research Associate to join our Bristol aerodynamics/control and dynamics teams. The successful candidate will be responsible for conducting research in the conceptual design of small unmanned aerial vehicles, with a focus on aircraft design, stability, and control.

Key Responsibilities
  • Conduct aircraft conceptual design and sizing studies using preliminary analysis tools.
  • Develop and incorporate stability and control constraints in the conceptual design loop, considering control surface and active flow control effectors.
  • Document estimated performance data and present results at review meetings.
  • Collaborate with the industrial partner to develop and implement advanced aerodynamic shape optimization techniques.
  • Contribute to the development of teaching materials and supervising MSc dissertations within the School of Civil, Aerospace & Design Engineering.
Requirements
  • PhD in Aerospace Engineering or a related field.
  • Experience in aircraft conceptual design and sizing, stability, and control.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills, with the ability to work independently and as part of a team.
  • Excellent communication and presentation skills, with the ability to document and present research findings.
  • Experience with CAD and/or aircraft conceptual design software tools, aircraft propulsion models, and computational aerodynamic methods.
