Under the guidance of the Haematology, Coagulation, and Blood Transfusion Management team, the successful candidate will be responsible for executing routine daily operations within these departments, rotating through all sections of the specialty while adhering to approved methodologies and protocols. Additionally, the role includes assisting in the training and development of Trainee Clinical Laboratory Scientists, Higher Healthcare Science Support Workers, Healthcare Support Workers, and other staff grades in accordance with departmental policy.
The post holder is expected to:

Job Duties
Responsibilities include:
- Reviewing requests and highlighting relevant clinical histories to facilitate accurate data entry by support staff.
- Rejecting specimens that do not meet established protocols and prioritizing specimen types based on urgency.
- Processing clinical specimens received in the laboratory unsupervised, in accordance with established SOPs. Analyzing pathology specimens and providing technically accurate results while being professionally accountable for the interpretation of patient results to inform diagnostic and treatment plans for clinical colleagues.
- Providing specialized knowledge and assistance to aid in the diagnosis and treatment of patients within the designated area of responsibility.
- Ensuring compliance with HCPC Standards of Proficiency for Clinical Laboratory Scientists.
- Communicating directly with service users (Consultants, staff nurses) clearly and accurately, which may involve conveying test results or advising on the type of specimen required for specific tests. Handling certain results sensitively due to potential social implications beyond the medical context.
- Reporting important or unusual results to senior staff and/or medical personnel promptly, as well as addressing complaints and anomalies as they arise.
- Organizing individual daily workloads and delegating tasks to support staff as appropriate, while collaborating with colleagues, senior staff, and clinical personnel as necessary.
- Familiarizing oneself with internal and external quality control procedures utilized within the Haematology, Coagulation, and Blood Transfusion departments, including reporting results to external quality control providers, conducting trend analysis, and discussing anomalies at quality meetings when required.
- Participating in internal, external, and clinical audit activities, reporting any non-conformances via the Quality Management System, and collaborating with the senior team to address and prevent future occurrences.
- Facilitating the efficient operation of the laboratory by alerting senior staff to potential technical or resource-related issues and proposing solutions.
