Job Summary

We are seeking a highly qualified and experienced Assistant Professor of Criminal Justice to join our team at the Commonwealth of Virginia. The successful candidate will be responsible for teaching a range of courses in the Master of Arts in Criminal Justice and Bachelor of Arts in Sociology programs, as well as contributing to the growth and development of the criminal justice curriculum and program.

Key Responsibilities
  • Teach a combination of courses in the Master of Arts in Criminal Justice and Bachelor of Arts in Sociology programs, including Introduction to Criminal Justice, Policing, Corrections, Crime and Delinquency, Juvenile Justice, Research Methods, Statistics, and Introduction to Sociology.
  • Develop and implement new courses and programs in the criminal justice curriculum, with a focus on growing the program and increasing student enrollment.
  • Conduct research and publish scholarly articles in the field of criminal justice, with a focus on social justice and criminological theories.
  • Serve on department and university committees, and participate in student recruitment, retention, and advisement activities.
  • Develop and maintain a strong research agenda, with a focus on securing external funding and publishing scholarly articles.
Requirements
  • Ph.D. in Criminal Justice, Sociology, or a closely related field is required.
  • Prior teaching experience in the Sociology or Criminal Justice discipline is required.
  • Active research agenda in the discipline is required.
  • Mastery of criminological and sociology theories and methodology is required.
  • Specialization in Social Justice is required.
  • Demonstrated ability to communicate to a diverse student-body audience, both verbally and in writing is required.
  • Demonstrated ability to grasp, advocate, and execute an institutional teaching and learning philosophy in higher education is required.
  • Demonstrated commitment to attaining online teaching certification is required.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience working with students from diverse backgrounds is preferred.
  • Experience with diversity initiatives and/or working with students from non-traditional or underrepresented groups is preferred.
