Software Engineer for Protein Function Development

We are seeking a talented software engineer to join our Protein Function development team at the European Molecular Biology Laboratory (EMBL). In this role, you will drive the software design and development for two world-class scientific resources: GlyGen, a leading platform in GlycoScience, and UniProt, one of the most prominent services in the field of biology and biomedicine.

About the Role

You will be based in a dynamic, multidisciplinary environment, working alongside excellent software engineers, bioinformaticians, and scientists to advance these critical resources. Your main responsibility will be architecting and developing robust software modules and scalable workflows for efficient data exchange, integration, and management of the ever-growing volume of scientific information.

Key Responsibilities
  • Design and develop software modules and workflows for data exchange, integration, and management
  • Collaborate with international teams across Europe and the US to advance scientific resources
  • Work in a dynamic, multidisciplinary environment with excellent software engineers, bioinformaticians, and scientists
  • Develop robust software solutions for efficient data management and analysis
Requirements
  • At least 2 years of professional software development experience in Java
  • Experience in Java programming and understanding of good coding practices
  • Familiarity with SQL and relational database design principles, Unix shell scripting
  • Ability to work as part of a team with a range of skills and backgrounds
