Position Overview

An exceptional opportunity has emerged within the South Tyneside and Sunderland NHS Foundation Trust for a proactive and dedicated midwife eager to enhance their expertise in the Quality & Safety domain of maternity care.

The selected individual will become a vital member of a team overseen by the Midwifery Manager for Quality and Safety, which includes four Quality & Safety Midwives and is supported by various administrative roles.

Our service delivers both Midwifery Led and Consultant Led Obstetric care, ensuring tailored support for all women throughout their pregnancy and childbirth journey. The maternity unit operates continuously, providing services every day of the year across multiple locations.

Work Schedule

The successful candidate will primarily engage with the Quality & Safety Team during standard office hours, necessitating a flexible approach to working hours.

Essential Qualifications:

Applicants must be Registered Midwives on Part 10 of the NMC Professional Register and should either hold or be pursuing a degree in midwifery. Strong interpersonal and communication skills are essential, along with a willingness to collaborate closely within a multidisciplinary team. Previous experience in a quality and safety capacity would be beneficial.

Key Responsibilities:

The post holder will collaborate with the Quality & Safety Management Team to assist Directorate Managers and Department Heads in executing the Trust's Quality & Safety Management Strategy. Responsibilities include:

  • Conducting investigations into incidents and proposing recommendations for quality enhancement and safety initiatives.
  • Providing comprehensive root cause analysis documentation and reports to enable Directorate Managers to address incident reports and complaints effectively.
  • Supporting serious incident investigations to ensure timely completion and high-quality reporting.
  • Partnering with the Quality & Safety Team and the Patient Experience Team to maintain consistent approaches during investigations and report writing.
  • Managing access to the Safeguard Incident Management System to track progress on investigation actions.
  • Ensuring compliance with Trust policies during investigations.
  • Assisting Directorate Managers with audit compliance related to Duty of Candour.
  • Guiding staff to appropriate support services during and after the investigation process.
  • Providing necessary information for the revalidation of staff in line with GMC/NMC requirements.
  • Facilitating the sharing of lessons learned across the Directorate and Trust to reduce future risks.
  • Leading multidisciplinary teams in the RCA process, compiling responses, and communicating necessary changes to practice.
  • Encouraging a culture of incident reporting to support thematic analysis and risk mitigation.
