Huntingdon, Cambridgeshire, United Kingdom North West Anglia NHS Foundation Trust Full time

Job Overview

The successful candidates will integrate with the current team of Acute Physicians within the Department of Acute Medicine at North West Anglia NHS Foundation Trust. This role primarily operates from Hinchingbrooke Hospital, with potential responsibilities at other sites. Candidates with qualifications in Acute Internal Medicine or General Internal Medicine recognized by the EEC are encouraged to apply. The role includes access to dedicated office space, administrative support, and IT resources. The post holder will engage across various units within the Acute Medicine department, including the Acute Assessment Unit (AAU), Short Stay Unit, and Ambulatory Care Unit (ACU). The AAU is responsible for the assessment and treatment of patients admitted through our unselected medical intake. The Ambulatory Care service is managed by a consultant and supported by specialty doctors and advanced nurse practitioners, while the Short Stay Ward caters to medical patients expected to be discharged within 72 hours, maintaining a high patient turnover. We are particularly interested in candidates who are eager to cultivate a clinical leadership role.

Key Responsibilities

- Deliver high-quality, safe, and compassionate care to acutely ill medical patients, ensuring an optimal experience during their hospital stay.

- Actively engage in Trust Clinical Governance initiatives, including audits, mortality reviews, and the appraisal process. The appointee will ensure that data collection and processing are accurate, timely, and compliant with Trust Data Quality Policy and Information Governance protocols.

- Provide teaching, training, and supervision to doctors, nurses, and students, fostering a positive and supportive learning environment.

- Maintain a record of Continuous Professional Development (CPD), including participation in Trust Mandatory training.

- Participate in regular appraisal processes for revalidation purposes.

- Undertake responsibilities as outlined in the Job Plan, utilizing effective leadership skills to contribute to the achievement of departmental and Trust objectives.

- Collaborate with colleagues to develop and promote clinical guidelines in alignment with evidence-based best practices.

Job Responsibilities

The Trust is committed to enhancing its acute medical services and is planning significant improvements to our urgent care model. Our current Acute Assessment Unit comprises 19 beds and 8 recliner chairs, alongside a 30-bedded short stay ward and an ambulatory care unit. We are in the process of establishing Same Day Emergency Care services (SDEC), which will encompass medical assessment, surgical assessment, and ambulatory care, including frailty services. These positions present a unique opportunity to be involved in the planning and development of an integrated SDEC service from its inception. The department will collaborate closely with primary care and community services to enhance patient care. We seek newly qualified consultants or established professionals with a passion for Acute Medicine who are ready for a new challenge. Candidates must be adept senior decision-makers capable of supporting the rapid assessment of patients, including conducting post-take ward rounds, directing patients to appropriate care pathways, and initiating treatment. There may be opportunities for specialty work for those with specific interests. Applicants interested in part-time work or job-sharing arrangements are encouraged to apply. Consultants are expected to provide strong clinical leadership and be available for consultation on any patient within the acute medicine department. Consultants should be present in the clinical area when scheduled for direct clinical care programmed activities (PAs).
