Job Description

Job Summary:

The Pirbright Institute is seeking a highly skilled and experienced Research Scientist to join our Coronavirus Group. The successful candidate will play a pivotal role in the development of innovative technologies for improved control of infectious bronchitis virus (IBV), a major avian pathogen.

About the Role:

This is a fixed-term contract position, and the successful candidate will be responsible for:

  • Conducting research on IBV and coronavirus reverse genetics
  • Developing and characterising vaccine candidates using tissue culture, organ cultures, and molecular virology techniques
  • Collaborating with the research team to design and implement experiments, and analyse data
  • Presenting research findings at internal and external meetings, and publishing in peer-reviewed journals

Key Responsibilities:

The successful candidate will be responsible for:

  • Preparing ex vivo organ cultures from chickens
  • Conducting cell and tissue culture, and preparing cell culture media and reagents
  • Growing, titrating, and characterising virus stocks
  • Performing sequencing analysis, and analysing host responses to infection or quantifying virus titres by qPCR
  • Conducting reverse genetics of coronaviruses, and virus neutralisation assays
  • Designing and implementing in vivo experiments, and liaising with animal services
  • Assessing clinical signs, and RNA extractions from harvested tissues
  • Contributing to the overall research group, including taking responsibility for daily laboratory housekeeping, and ensuring safe working practices

Requirements:

To be successful in this role, the candidate will need:

  • Significant relevant laboratory bench experience in a recognised R&D environment, especially in infectious disease
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills, including the ability to communicate effectively within a team, and with collaborators
  • Experience in virological, molecular biological, and cell and tissue culture techniques

Desirable Requirements:

The following skills and experience would be advantageous:

  • A PhD or equivalent in a relevant branch of biosciences
  • Experience of working with animals in a research environment
  • Computer literate with a good knowledge of different computer programs, and experience in data presentation and statistical analyses
  • Evidence of networking skills, and the ability to build effective collaborative relationships
  • Evidence of experience and vision to carry out scientific research in a multi-disciplinary environment
  • Experience in working with IBV and/or coronavirus reverse genetics
  • Experience in preparing and working with ex vivo organ cultures
