Position Overview

Consultant in Acute Medicine: Up to 10 Programmed Activities

We are seeking a professional who will:

  • Deliver exceptional consultant-led care to patients in need of our services, ensuring adherence to the highest clinical standards;
  • Engage in teaching and training at both undergraduate and postgraduate levels, while supervising and mentoring junior clinical staff and specialty doctors;
  • Actively participate in the Department's clinical governance initiatives and assume leadership roles to foster continuous learning and enhancement, in alignment with the Trust's clinical and corporate governance policies;
  • Collaborate with clinicians and management across various departments to address any service-related concerns;
  • Contribute to relevant audit and quality assurance activities.

The Acute Medicine department at Torbay and South Devon NHS Foundation Trust is recognized for its proactive approach to service enhancement, quality improvement, and educational initiatives. The department benefits from robust leadership and maintains effective communication with the hospital's executive team regarding the development of acute services.

Our department is known for its supportive environment, catering to both senior medical professionals and trainees. We work in close collaboration with established multidisciplinary teams, including nurses, physiotherapists, occupational therapists, and discharge coordinators, within our Emergency Assessment Unit and Acute Medical Unit, all while upholding a strong culture of safety and professionalism.

About Our Organization

The Acute Medicine department at Torbay and South Devon NHS Foundation Trust is a vibrant unit that takes an active role in service development, quality enhancement, and educational training. Our team provides care in the Acute Medical Unit and the short-stay Acute Medicine ward, focusing on the initial 48 hours of the patient journey. We also offer an in-reach service in the Emergency Department during daytime hours. General medical on-call duties are shared with colleagues from various specialties, ensuring comprehensive care. We have established excellent working relationships with specialty physicians, with immediate access to specialist advice. Our clinical areas are structured around a well-defined multidisciplinary team approach, featuring daily business MDT board rounds. The Emergency Assessment Unit consistently receives positive feedback from patients and families, with nursing staff fostering a caring team dynamic in a fast-paced environment. The therapy and discharge teams play a crucial role in discharge planning, utilizing a range of intermediate care services to facilitate community transitions.

Qualifications and Training

Essential

  • Full GMC Registration (with a license to practice).
  • CCT Specialist Registration or expected to obtain within 6 months of the interview date.
  • CESR.
  • Minimum of English Level 2 (GCSE grade C or equivalent), IELTS, or a graduate of a UK Medical School.
  • ATLS / APLS / ALS certification.

Management & Administrative Experience

Essential

  • Proven ability to deliver effective specialist clinical services.
  • Experience in audit and management.
  • Evidence of patient involvement in practice.
  • Demonstrated innovative development and implementation of guidelines.

Teaching Experience

Essential

  • Proven capability to teach clinical skills within multidisciplinary teams, applying evidence-based knowledge.
  • Evidence of relevant research, publications, or presentations.
