About the Role

We are seeking a highly skilled and experienced Secondary Systems Engineer to join our team at Linxon. As a key member of our engineering team, you will play a critical role in the design and delivery of our substation projects.

Key Responsibilities

  • Design and develop secondary systems, control, and protection up to 400kV to meet contract requirements.
  • Prepare and verify Design Intent Documents (DID), Technical Specifications, and Request for Quotations (RFQs) for Plant and Protection and Control (P&C) equipment.
  • Develop comprehensive secondary designs, including Single-Line Diagrams (SLD), Knowledge-Based Lists (KLD), AC & DC distribution systems, battery and battery charger sizing, voltage drop, cable sizing, signal lists, setting calculations, interface lists, cable block diagrams, multicore & fiber optic cable schedules, and cable core sheets.
  • Specify Current Transformers (CTs) & Voltage Transformers (VTs) in terms of electrical characteristics and physical size.
  • Approve supplier designs for a wide range of equipment and packages, including data sheets, load consumption, scheme drawings, circuit diagrams, wiring diagrams, etc., and incorporate vendor information into the design.
  • Support Pre-FAT / FAT and commissioning activities.
  • Provide technical support for tendering, working within defined budgetary objectives, and assist in preparing proposals and presentations for engineering projects by creating Work Breakdown Structures, providing bills of materials, estimated engineering & drafting hours, and other necessary details.
  • List, report, and address all noted deviations to the engineering specifications, plan, and suggest corrective actions. Clarify potential issues or provide solutions to correct engineering errors in cooperation with the engineering manager.
  • Offer a flexible approach to work tasks and be prepared to work additional hours when necessary to ensure the successful delivery of the project.
  • Mentor other team members as required.
  • Participate in design and hazard review meetings and ensure design risk assessments/HAZID's are in place for all design solutions and residual risks are passed on to the H&S file. Positively influence design and construction safety performance and aim for zero accidents.
  • Coordinate with the client, project management, primary, and civil engineering teams, as well as other interfaces, to ensure the delivery of high-quality technical outputs within the agreed delivery timescales and budget.

Requirements

  • Minimum qualification of a bachelor's or master's degree in electrical or electronics engineering, with a minimum 10 years of experience in transmission and distribution (ranging from 11kV to 400kV).
  • Experience as a Contractor Design Approval Engineer (CDAE) / Lead Contractor Design Approval Engineer (LCDAE), as defined by National Grid's NG/ET/SR188 procedure, will be an advantage.
  • Member of the Institution of Engineering and Technology (IET) or equivalent Professional Body; Chartered status (through IET) status or working towards is desirable.
  • Proficiency in generating and comprehensive understanding of engineering design, particularly in secondary engineering for Gas-Insulated Switchgear (GIS) and Air-Insulated Switchgear (AIS) substations.
  • Understanding/knowledge of Distribution Network Operator/National Grid etc. standards and drawing practices.
  • Good knowledge in communication protocols used in automation systems like IEC 101, IEC 104, IEC 61850, security standards (IEC 62443, ISO 27019), technologies, and best practices for substation automation engineering ideally with multiple vendors.
  • Demonstrable Health, Safety, Quality, and Environment (HSQE) management knowledge including CDM requirements is desirable.
  • Good teamwork, analytical, and communication skills.
  • Capable of working to tight time scales.
  • Working knowledge of Windows, MS Office, Amtech, and Autocad.
  • Understanding of electronic records management systems.
  • A full team player with the ability to work within a multi-national, multi-cultural team.
