Job Title: Science Laboratory Technician

Empowering Learning is seeking a highly skilled and organized Science Laboratory Technician to join our team. As a Science Laboratory Technician, you will play a crucial role in supporting the Science Department in maintaining a safe and efficient laboratory environment.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Preparation of Science Materials and Equipment:
    • Conduct risk assessments for technical activities
    • Dispose of waste materials in accordance with CLEAPSS guidelines
    • Prepare equipment, chemicals, specimens, and set out apparatus, visual aids, and relevant paperwork for all lessons
    • Clear laboratories and store all apparatus after use, ensuring rooms are clean and ready for the next lesson
    • Check individual components in and out for class use
    • Prepare chemicals and solutions
    • Liaise with staff over use of equipment and stock
    • Advise staff of any problems, including safety aspects
    • Assist with collection and cataloguing of sundry worksheets, books, audio-visual aids, and materials
    • Repair damages, where possible, or arrange for this to be done
    • Construct apparatus and equipment
  • Routine Maintenance of Science Laboratories and Preparation Rooms:
    • Maintain clean and tidy laboratories in conjunction with the teacher in charge of the room, including the neutralization and cleaning up of spillages
    • Ensure that any scientific debris or hazardous materials/spills are removed from the sinks, bench tops, and other areas to provide a safe environment for cleaning staff and others
    • Store materials tidily and safely
    • Keep all equipment clean, including goggles, safety screens, and fume cupboards
    • Look after animals, insects, and plants kept by the department
    • Carry out safety checks on equipment, e.g., bunsen tubing
  • Maintaining Stocks of Science Chemicals and Equipment:
    • Stock take of chemicals, consumables, stationery, books, and breakable items
    • Timely ordering of necessary stock items with the approval of the Head of Department
    • Check deliveries on arrival and query any missing/damaged items with the supplier
  • Other:
    • Undertake reprographic duties and routine 'resource' tasks, as determined by the needs of the Science Department
    • Invigilate examinations as directed by the Exams Officer, as required
Requirements:
  • IT literate
  • Effective and efficient communication skills, both verbal and written
  • Excellent organizational skills
  • Team worker
  • Prior experience of work as a School Science Technician is essential
