Chief Scientific Adviser for National Security

As a key member of the MI5 team, the Chief Scientific Adviser for National Security will play a critical role in shaping the organization's strategic approach to science and technology. The successful candidate will have a strong background in a relevant scientific or engineering discipline and excellent communication skills.
The Chief Scientific Adviser will provide strategic advice to the three intelligence agency heads and work in partnership with their leadership teams to develop and implement the agencies' organizational strategies. They will also develop an understanding of the international S&T landscape to help shape UK national security thinking and identify opportunities for collaboration with international partners.
The ideal candidate will have credibility as a scientist, engineer, or technologist, renowned in their discipline, and excellent communication skills to connect across science, mission, and policy communities. They will be committed to their own personal development, growing capability in others, and strongly promoting diversity and inclusion.
The Chief Scientific Adviser will be responsible for sponsoring innovation, including engagement with the National Security Strategic Investment Fund, and overseeing the MI5, SIS, and GCHQ Scientific Advisory Council. They will also represent the Government Chief Scientific Adviser and national security science in a range of HMG fora.
The successful candidate will be informed as soon as possible if they have been selected to proceed. The selection process will include a staff engagement panel, technical assessment, and psychometric assessments. The terms of appointment include a fixed term of three years with the potential to be extended up to five years, and nationality and security clearance requirements.
