Senior Mechanical Engineer – Linear Infrastructure Projects

Murphy Applied Engineering is a multifaceted division, executing the 'Better Engineered' strategic initiative to realize intelligent, safe, and constructible solutions within project timelines. Spanning various industry sectors such as water, energy, and power, Murphy Applied Engineering offers specialized engineering assistance across multiple disciplines: Mechanical, Geotechnical, Process, Surveying, and both Permanent and Temporary works within Civil and Structural infrastructure.

Key Responsibilities


• Conduct constructability evaluations related to linear infrastructure projects.


• Assist clients throughout the planning application process.


• Oversee pipeline installation engineering for linear infrastructure projects.


• Execute detailed design of transmission pipelines in accordance with industry and regulatory standards.


• Perform Pre-FEED and FEED studies for significant pipeline/power cable infrastructure projects.


• Design pipeline routing in collaboration with the geospatial team.


• Lead design risk assessments.


• Author, review, and approve technical design documentation.


• Manage project reporting and coordinate design activities within the engineering team.


• Represent the design department at internal and external meetings as necessary.


• Collaborate with other departments and project teams regarding design specifications.


• Conduct site visits as required.


• Maintain accurate records of time spent on projects and manage team workloads.


• Gather feedback on designs as needed.


• Mentor and guide individual team members in their professional growth.


• Provide technical support to bid teams for tender submissions and develop design estimates for inclusion in overall proposals.

Candidate Profile


• Degree in Mechanical or Civil Engineering.


• Chartered or working towards Chartership with a professional institution regulated by the Engineering Council.


• Proven experience in Pre-FEED, FEED, and detailed design for major linear infrastructure projects in the UK, contributing to the government's net zero targets for 2050, including steel transmission pipelines and plastic ducts for subsequent power cable installation.


• Familiarity with the UK planning application process under a Development Consent Order (DCO).


• Understanding of construction equipment used for installing steel pipelines and plastic cable ducts.


• Proficient in geospatial analysis software such as ArcGIS or QGIS.


• Strong technical report writing capabilities.


• Design experience with trenchless crossing techniques is advantageous but not mandatory.


• Knowledge of consent requirements for rail, road, and watercourse crossings is preferred but not essential.


• Awareness of environmental restrictions in the UK is beneficial.
