Edinburgh, Edinburgh, United Kingdom NHS Scotland Full time

NHS Scotland is dedicated to fostering equality and diversity within our workforce, aiming to create an environment where every employee feels valued and empowered to perform at their best. We actively encourage applications from all sectors of society.

We are committed to supporting candidates with disabilities, long-term conditions, or neurodivergent traits by implementing reasonable adjustments in our recruitment processes.

We invite applications for a permanent position as a Registered Clinical Scientist specializing in genetics within the Southeast of Scotland Genetics Service. Our laboratory is fully accredited by UKAS and offers both regional and national genetic services. Candidates should possess experience in human genetics and a solid understanding of common genetic disorders. The successful candidate will face the challenges of delivering complex routine testing while also engaging in service development initiatives.

Our department values continuous learning, featuring a regular seminar program, and offers training in management skills when appropriate. The laboratory is equipped with state-of-the-art facilities and has strong connections with various research entities.

The role of the Registered Clinical Scientist includes:

  • Serving as a career-grade scientist within a regional and national specialist genetics service.
  • Conducting analysis, interpretation, and reporting of genetic tests, with the authority to authorize a subset of these tests.
  • Implementing quality standards and quality control measures in accordance with current guidelines and legislation.
  • Providing a comprehensive range of molecular genetics and cytogenetic testing for inherited and some acquired disorders, while advising clinicians and healthcare professionals on testing appropriateness and result interpretation.

Additionally, the successful candidate will collaborate with the Director of Service on service development initiatives and will hold various administrative responsibilities within the laboratory.

Applicants must be registered, or soon to be registered, with the Health and Care Professions Council (HCPC) as a clinical scientist in genetics.
