Position Overview

This role is for a Consultant in Anaesthesia Services. The successful candidate will collaborate with a multi-disciplinary team to deliver anaesthetic care, perioperative management, and pain relief services for patients. The position requires active participation in the department's overall responsibilities, including the education and mentorship of junior medical staff.

The Anaesthesia Department is dedicated to providing comprehensive perioperative care for patients undergoing a diverse range of surgical procedures, both elective and urgent. The department also offers pain management services across various locations.

Key Responsibilities

The position is primarily based at multiple hospital sites and follows a structured job plan with designated theatre sessions. The role encompasses:

- Delivering exceptional clinical services to patients.

- Providing effective leadership and support to all team members within the specialty.

- Promoting and advancing educational and research initiatives in partnership with academic institutions.

- Adhering to the Trust's operational policies and procedures in all professional activities.

- Ensuring compliance with contractual obligations and service delivery plans.

- Upholding the confidentiality of strategic plans and development initiatives related to the specialty.

Job Duties

The key duties include:

  1. Collaborating with colleagues to ensure high-quality patient care, encompassing all treatment aspects and management responsibilities.
  2. Sharing the responsibility for providing continuous cover for the unit, including during colleagues' absences.
  3. Supervising junior medical practitioners in a collaborative manner.
  4. Engaging in teaching, assessment, and accreditation activities as required, while contributing to continuous professional development and clinical governance.
  5. Managing outpatient clinic responsibilities as agreed with the management team.
  6. Supporting the department's research initiatives in line with the Trust's research and development framework.
  7. Participating in audit programs and clinical governance activities.
  8. Assisting in the development and monitoring of the department's business plan.
  9. Conducting all activities within the agreed service levels and operational plans.
  10. Providing professional leadership to all staff within the specialty, fostering ongoing education and training.
  11. Collaborating with clinical colleagues to maintain staff productivity and job satisfaction.
  12. Undertaking management duties as agreed with departmental leadership.
  13. Complying with all infection prevention and control policies.
  14. Preparing for and executing protective interventions in line with evidence-based practices.
  15. Contributing to the Trust's commitment to providing consultant-led services throughout the week.

Qualifications and Requirements

Essential

  • Full registration with the General Medical Council (GMC).
  • Fellowship of the Royal College of Anaesthetists (FRCA) or equivalent.
  • Extensive experience in all facets of anaesthesia.
  • Registration on the Specialist Register upon appointment.

Desirable

  • Additional higher degree or diploma (e.g., MD).
  • A special interest or fellowship in a relevant area.
  • Familiarity with the current structure of the healthcare system and management qualifications.
