Position Overview

This opportunity has emerged due to the requirement for a Consultant specializing in Cornea and Anterior Segment. Within the Ophthalmology department, the selected candidate will spearhead the Cornea/Anterior Segment sub-specialty, aiming to enhance and broaden the services offered. This role encompasses outpatient clinics focused on Cornea/Anterior Segment, supported by specialty doctors, trainees, optometrists, and orthoptists. The department is well-equipped with advanced technology including Topography, Biometry, Anterior Segment imaging, and Pachymetry. Additionally, there are fully supported theatre sessions for various Corneal/Anterior Segment surgical procedures, including corneal transplants and cataract surgeries. The role also includes a commitment to teaching and training junior and specialty doctors within the department.

The successful applicant will integrate into an established team of senior medical professionals, including Consultants and Specialty and Associate Specialist (SAS) doctors. Upon joining, you will become part of a collaborative and supportive team dedicated to driving improvements in patient care. Main Responsibilities

Clinical Responsibilities:

Collaboration within a multidisciplinary team is a fundamental aspect of this role, involving regular discussions with colleagues.

Delivering evidence-based patient care in a multidisciplinary environment.

Maintaining ongoing responsibility for the care of assigned patients, including all administrative tasks related to patient management (with secretarial assistance).

Advancing the Cornea/Anterior Segment sub-specialty in alignment with the Division's needs and the strategic objectives of the Trust.

Engaging in teaching, examination, and accreditation responsibilities, contributing to both undergraduate and postgraduate medical education.

Providing coverage for Consultant colleagues during their leave, as per Trust policy.

Participating in clinical audits and ongoing medical education.

Performing necessary duties in emergency situations and unforeseen circumstances.

The post holder will be involved in an out-of-hours consultant on-call rota, as detailed in the job plan section.

Job Responsibilities

All personnel within each Division are managerially accountable through their Lead Clinician to the Associate Medical Director, who oversees the services within the Division. Consultants play a crucial role in leading service improvements that enhance patient experiences.

  • Support the Clinical Lead in developing policies and strategies as a senior member of the Division Management Team.
  • Contribute to the leadership and development of services under the guidance of the Clinical Lead and Associate Medical Director, in accordance with the Trust's business plans.
  • Ensure effective communication and staff involvement across the Division, assisting the Divisional Director in achieving objectives.
  • Collaborate with colleagues in other Divisions within the Trust.
  • Assist in the efficient use of resources, including financial and non-financial items such as equipment and medications, within budgetary constraints.
  • Adhere to the Trust's framework for Clinical Governance and Risk, including the formulation of clinical policies and compliance with financial procedures.
  • Supervise junior colleagues and participate in departmental and Trust-wide educational programs.
  • Conduct investigations and prepare reports for incidents, engaging in clinical risk management.
  • Appointed candidates will embody the STAR values and utilize the principles of the NHS Constitution for England to guide their decisions.

Qualifications

Essential:

  • GMC registration.
  • CCT (or equivalent for non-UK applicants), or be accredited (or equivalent), and be on the GMC Specialist Register in the relevant specialty at the time of appointment. Alternatively, candidates may hold or be within six months of their CCT at the time of interview.
