About the Agency:
The Commonwealth of Virginia's Department of Juvenile Justice (DJJ) is dedicated to safeguarding the community by equipping youth involved with the court system to thrive as responsible citizens. DJJ prioritizes public safety through effective interventions that enhance the lives of young individuals, thereby strengthening families and communities throughout the state.
Position Overview:
In this capacity, the selected candidate will enforce best practices in overseeing and securing juveniles within a controlled residential environment by actively supervising frontline personnel.
Key Responsibilities Include:
1. Conducting thorough inspections and searches of communal areas and perimeters in assigned locations to uphold safety, security, and a healthy atmosphere.
2. Providing direct oversight to Juvenile Correctional Services (JCS) staff within the designated area of responsibility on campus.
3. Completing all necessary administrative and program documentation, including timesheets, leave requests, incident reports, and logbook entries, ensuring they are filled out accurately and promptly.
4. Assisting in the on-the-job training of new JCS personnel and offering continuous coaching to all staff members.
Additional Information:
Multiple vacancies will be filled from this announcement. Candidates selected for this role will undergo a comprehensive background investigation and a pre-employment drug screening.
Training Requirements:
The incumbent must complete the mandated training and certifications set forth by the Department of Juvenile Justice.
Public Interaction:
This role necessitates in-person, face-to-face engagement with the public, including staff and juveniles in care, requiring direct interaction with youth and their families.
Minimum Qualifications:
Extensive supervisory experience in a secure residential environment. Proficient knowledge of safety, security, and crisis intervention techniques. Capability to utilize appropriate restraint methods, operate security equipment, and administer first aid. Ability to supervise and interact with juvenile offenders while serving as a constructive role model. Proven ability to communicate effectively with the public, staff, and juveniles; maintain records and documentation; prepare reports; quickly assess situations; and take appropriate actions.
Preferred Qualifications:
Progressively responsible experience in corrections or law enforcement, with a portion of that experience at a supervisory level.
