Position Overview:

As a pivotal member of the underwriting team, the Underwriting Portfolio Manager will provide critical support to the Chief Underwriting Officer (CUO) and Portfolio Director. This role is essential in shaping, analyzing, and reviewing underwriting strategies, ensuring effective communication between insurers and the Managing General Agent (MGA) to enhance underwriting practices tailored to specific binders and insurers.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Facilitate insurer meetings, both scheduled and impromptu, contributing insights and documentation as necessary, while collaborating with the MGA to execute agreed-upon underwriting and pricing strategies.
  • Conduct thorough data analysis, delivering key insights and actionable recommendations.
  • Track loss ratio targets for each binder and propose necessary corrective measures.
  • Develop comprehensive underwriting plans for finalization and approval within the Managing General Underwriter (MGU) and with insurers.
  • Collaborate closely with business teams and technical managers to identify and address performance challenges.
  • Provide detailed impact assessments of proposed changes to the portfolio.
  • Model and present ad-hoc data for capacity partners, aiding in the selection and acquisition of new capacity partners.
  • Assist the MGU in establishing and implementing a consistent approach to underwriting best practices.
  • Work alongside technical managers within Q Underwriting to foster best practices and a systematic approach to technical underwriting, including peer reviews and training frameworks.
  • Ensure compliance with established underwriting standards.
  • Support the development and execution of propositions for both new and existing binders.

Required Experience:

The ideal candidate will have a robust understanding of the London Market Insurance Industry, demonstrating enthusiasm and diligence. Essential qualifications include:

  • ACII qualification or progress towards it.
  • Technical underwriting experience in Property or Casualty insurance.
  • Background in an underwriting role within an insurance company.
  • Experience in a portfolio team is advantageous.
  • Familiarity with delegated underwriting processes is beneficial.
  • Strong grasp of underwriting calculations, including loss ratios and combined ratios.
  • Proficient in data analysis and trend identification.
  • Advanced skills in Excel and PowerPoint.
  • Solutions-oriented approach to underwriting.
  • Focus on profitability and growth.
