Position Overview

An exciting opportunity has emerged for a Pharmaceutical Procurement Specialist to become a part of the Generics Medicines team within NHS England's Medicines Procurement and Supply Chain division, which operates under the Medicines Value & Access Directorate - Chief Financial Officer Group. The Generics team is tasked with achieving significant savings in the procurement of generic pharmaceuticals, which are essential for the NHS. The successful candidate will join a proactive team dedicated to executing and enhancing procurement strategies for generic medicines in secondary healthcare settings. This role is pivotal in delivering a professional, efficient, and high-quality procurement service that adheres to all statutory, regulatory, and NHS standards, ensuring alignment with the organization's activities.

The position can be based in various locations.

Key Responsibilities

As a Procurement Specialist within our medicines team, the successful candidate will collaborate with managers and staff across the Medicines Procurement & Supply Chain to facilitate the procurement of medicines for the NHS.

Specifically, the responsibilities will include:

  • Overseeing the execution of the medicines framework agreement tendering program on behalf of the NHS, ensuring compliance with Public Contracts Regulations.
  • Leading or assisting in each tender process as necessary, working closely with NHS Pharmacy, healthcare specialists, and pharmaceutical industry partners to address contracting challenges.
  • Preparing detailed adjudication reports and supplementary documentation, including additional analyses when required.
  • Managing ongoing contract activities, such as uptake assessments, key performance indicators, and addressing supplier performance issues.
  • Cultivating and maintaining robust stakeholder relationships, both internally within the NHS and externally.
  • Ensuring that systems such as the Contract Management System, Project Management System, and NHS Pharmacy Web Catalogue are consistently updated.
  • Assisting in the coordination and management of supply chain issues.
  • Providing flexible support to the broader Medicines Procurement & Supply Chain teams as needed.

Qualifications and Experience

Essential Qualifications

  • A degree in a relevant field related to professional purchasing principles or equivalent qualifications, or substantial experience in a similar role.

Knowledge and Experience Requirements

  • Familiarity with professional purchasing principles, ideally through the Chartered Institute of Purchasing and Supply (CIPS) or equivalent experience in procurement.
  • Extensive experience in procurement, including proficiency with computerized procurement systems.
  • Proven track record of successfully managing multiple projects in a fast-paced and complex environment.

Communication and Interpersonal Skills

  • Strong communication skills, with the ability to write reports and present ideas clearly and effectively to diverse audiences.
