Keeping children and young people at the forefront of your considerations, you will actively engage them and their families, ensuring their voices are integral to their educational experiences.

This pivotal position within our learning inclusion service involves overseeing our educational psychology and special educational needs and disabilities (SEND) support functions. We are part of a council recognized for excellence in children's services, with a commitment to restorative practices and a Family Valued Model that drives our focus on achieving set objectives.

We are dedicated to the vision of a Child Friendly Leeds, aspiring to create an environment where all children and young people feel safe, happy, and healthy, excel academically, and grow into engaged citizens.

Leeds City Council, one of the region's largest employers, seeks to attract and nurture talented individuals who reflect our values and ambitions.

In your capacity as Senior Educational Psychologist and Service Lead, you will possess a degree in psychology (with eligibility for graduate membership with the British Psychological Society) and a postgraduate qualification in Educational Psychology, achieved through one of the following pathways:

  • A minimum of two years' experience working with children and young people alongside three years of doctoral training in Educational Psychology.

It is essential that candidates are registered with the Health and Care Professions Council.

Key Qualifications and Skills:

  • Extensive management experience in children's services, demonstrating a successful track record of translating policy into tangible service delivery and outcomes.
  • Proficient people management and leadership abilities, fostering a culture of positivity and continuous improvement.
  • A collaborative mindset with the capability to build and maintain successful partnerships, influence, negotiate, and establish credibility in a multi-agency context.
  • Thorough understanding of regulations, legislation, and policies, alongside local and national issues affecting service strategy and delivery.
  • Commitment to amplifying the voices of children and young people, ensuring their families are actively involved in decision-making processes.

About the Role

As a Senior Educational Psychologist and Service Lead, you will play a crucial role in our SEN and Inclusion Senior Management Team, contributing your expertise to strategic planning across the educational landscape.

This is a remarkable opportunity to effect meaningful change in SEND provision and inclusion for numerous children in a major urban setting. You will hold a leadership position within a large local authority, benefiting from established strategic connections with health and care partners, as well as close collaborations with educational institutions.

Your responsibilities will include leading and managing the educational psychology team and other specialist SEND teams, which support young individuals with various needs, including cognition and learning challenges, social communication difficulties, and emotional health concerns.

The focus of our work is the children and young people themselves, guided by the principle that their voices must be heard and their perspectives valued.

You will join us during a period of positive transformation, making you a vital contributor to the council's strategy for delivering high-quality integrated services. We are actively working to streamline access to our SEND services, ensuring that educational settings receive timely assistance from the appropriate teams.

The Leeds Educational Psychology Team is a large, dynamic, and innovative group, composed of psychologists with diverse experiences and interests, collaborating with colleagues and partners throughout the city. In this collaborative environment, we engage in exciting initiatives, such as our trauma-informed approach to support young people affected by adverse experiences and ongoing efforts to address the needs of neurodiverse individuals.
