Manchester, United Kingdom RSM Full time
Financial Reporting and Accounting Manager

We are seeking a Financial Reporting and Accounting Manager.

Our Consulting division unites various teams across Transactions, Risk & Consulting, ABA, and Outsourcing to deliver client-focused solutions for RSM's existing and prospective clients in the middle market. The Consulting team plays a crucial role in propelling the firm's growth, with over 1,700 professionals generating nearly £200m in revenue.

Central to Consulting are the six solutions we provide: business transformation, deal services, finance function support, risk and governance, forensic and investigation services, and restructuring. These solutions offer a customized approach to assist our clients in reaching their strategic objectives while empowering our team members to make a significant impact and carve out their unique career paths.

This dynamic position is within a large Accounting and Business Advisory (ABA) team, located in our Manchester office.

The role involves managing our Accounting and Financial Reporting (AFR) service line. Our AFR services encompass the preparation of statutory financial statements for large and medium-sized enterprises, offering financial reporting guidance, and collaborating with audit and tax teams on financial reporting projects.

We serve clients across diverse sectors, including retail, media and technology, travel, manufacturing, and private equity-backed entities. With a personal, Partner and Director-led approach, we act as trusted advisors to a wide array of clients, from small owner-managed businesses to large corporate entities.

Overall Job Purpose

As with all managers in the team, you will assist the Department Head in daily management while overseeing your own client portfolio, ensuring the highest standards of client service are maintained. You will actively contribute to the department's growth by identifying opportunities and engaging in related business development activities.

The responsibilities include providing GAAP support and advisory services to our clients, guiding our (non-audit) clients through their audit processes. Strong managerial and technical expertise, with a comprehensive understanding of FRS 102, FRS 101, and Companies Act reporting requirements, is essential, while IFRS experience is preferred. Additional areas of expertise, such as acquisition accounting, share-based payments, and debt modifications, would be advantageous.

Key Responsibilities

Manage a diverse portfolio of clients with various assignments, which includes:
determining resource needs and ensuring the team possesses the relevant experience and skills; liaising with clients to establish timelines and meet deadlines for deliverables; serving as the primary contact for clients, maintaining frequent communication and understanding their business needs; monitoring team progress against budgets; ensuring effective collaboration with all other departments to identify and meet client needs; reviewing work completed by junior team members, providing constructive feedback, and proactively identifying training requirements; and thoroughly researching and resolving issues prior to Partner or Director review. Maintain an advanced level of technical knowledge through appropriate reading and courses, fulfilling any development or training needs. Provide technical support to the AFR Directors and Partners, as well as technical advice to our client base and other departments as needed. Engage with clients throughout the year, consistently practicing excellent client service principles. Closely monitor practice management system reports to ensure profitable recoverability of work in progress and timely billing. Develop a thorough understanding of the firm's specialized services, actively seek cross-selling opportunities, and undertake special projects in response to client needs when appropriate. Participate in the recruitment process for specialized hires or graduate recruits, leading initial interviews and making recommendations to AFR Directors and Partners. As a line manager, oversee the AFR team's appraisal process, ensuring appropriate objectives and development plans are established for junior team members. You will also support the overall technical training and development needs of the staff within the AFR department. Conduct the firm's review and completion procedures, attend final meetings with clients, and ensure timely delivery of final accounts, management letters, and adjustments to opening balances. Engage in any other administrative departmental and office matters as deemed necessary. Carry out ad hoc assignments as required.

Key Performance Indicators

Deliver high-quality service to clients, ensuring timetables are met. Achieve utilization, profitability, and recovery targets. Increase recoveries and engagement margins within the client portfolio. Cross-sell additional services and introduce other service lines to clients, securing new work for the firm and fee increases within the client portfolio. Adhere to the firm's procedures and values. Demonstrate ownership and responsibility for the completion of assignments. Represent the Firm professionally through appearance, conduct, and attitude.

Personal and Professional Qualities

The role requires:

ACA/ACCA qualification, with a minimum of three years PQE and at least one year of experience managing a full client portfolio. Strong technical capabilities. Proficiency in accounting software. In-depth knowledge of UK financial reporting standards. Well-developed interpersonal skills to engage with clients and colleagues. Excellent organizational and time management abilities. Availability to be present in the office at least three days a week to support colleagues face-to-face.
