Environmental Services Technician

Cardiff County Council's Cleaning Services is looking to recruit dedicated Cleaners to join our Cleaning Team, ensuring a pristine environment for educational institutions and corporate buildings across the Cardiff region.
About the RoleThe available positions will primarily be within educational facilities.
These roles offer flexibility around school hours and holiday periods. While working hours may vary slightly at different locations, cleaners typically work a minimum number of hours per week from Monday to Friday during the academic year.
Morning shifts generally occur between 6:00 AM – 9:00 AM, while afternoon shifts run from 3:00 PM – 6:00 PM.
Successful candidates will be assigned a fixed number of hours and shifts each week from Monday to Friday.
For those interested in additional hours, there are opportunities to work both morning and afternoon shifts, although these may be at different school sites. Furthermore, there may be chances to assist with the Council's School Catering Service during daytime hours at select schools.
Cleaners will also be required to perform deep cleaning tasks, which may occur up to a maximum of two weeks during school holidays, including mid-term breaks and summer vacations, in preparation for the new school term. Typically, these hours will be consolidated into longer shifts over two or three days each week, focusing on intensive cleaning. These specific weeks will be communicated at the beginning of each academic year.
While time off is not permitted during school operational periods or deep clean weeks, aside from leave outlined in special provisions, your salary will include additional compensation on a pro-rata basis for annual leave and public/bank holidays.
The role involves a variety of cleaning duties within school facilities, including dusting, sweeping, vacuuming, mopping, polishing, hygiene cleaning, emptying bins, and mechanical buffing.
All Cleaners will receive uniforms, including tabards/polo shirts and disposable gloves, which are essential for the job. Comprehensive on-the-job training will be provided for all cleaning tasks, along with periodic refresher courses. Additionally, you will undergo an induction covering health and safety protocols, proper use of cleaning equipment and materials, and site-specific orientation at each location you will be assigned to.
The Council offers an attractive benefits package, which includes:
- Competitive hourly pay at the Living Wage level.
- Enhanced holiday pay.
- A generous contributory pension scheme.
- Discounts at select Council Leisure Centres.
- Reduced annual bus fare options.
- Access to Cardiff Credit Union for savings and loans.
- Discounted MOT testing for personal vehicles.
- Free library membership and access to digital eBook platforms.
- A variety of additional family-friendly HR policy benefits.
We provide opportunities for personal development, such as work-based NVQ Level Cleaning & Support Services Skills, which can be further advanced by completing additional levels. Career progression within the cleaning service may lead to roles such as Chargehand, Site Supervisor, or Service Delivery Supervisor. Working in this field will equip you with transferable skills, including organization, communication, problem-solving, multitasking, diligence, and attention to detail.
What We Are Looking ForNo prior cleaning experience is necessary, as all required training will be provided.
We are seeking candidates who:
- Are physically fit and capable of working intensively throughout their shifts.
- Demonstrate a strong customer care attitude.
- Possess effective communication skills.
- Can work collaboratively as part of a team and also independently.
Every effort will be made to assign successful applicants to positions close to their residences, but more opportunities will be available for those willing to travel using public transport or personal vehicles.
