Position Overview

University Hospitals Sussex NHS Foundation Trust is offering an exceptional opportunity for a Consultant Rheumatologist to enhance our dedicated team.

Role Responsibilities

This newly established position aims to uphold our commitment to delivering outstanding care quality and innovation in rheumatology.

The role encompasses a 10 PA commitment, primarily from Monday to Friday, with some flexibility for remote work.

The successful candidate will be responsible for:

  • Conducting four rheumatology clinics weekly.
  • Providing support and guidance in training and clinical decision-making within our multidisciplinary team.
  • Participating in weekly radiology meetings and complex case reviews.
  • Engaging in monthly academic discussions and interstitial lung disease meetings.
  • Exploring opportunities for research and education, with potential formal affiliation with Brighton and Sussex Medical School.
Clinical Duties

This position is designed to meet service demands and bolster consultant rheumatology services across various areas, including:

  • Inflammatory arthritis
  • Connective tissue diseases and vasculitis
  • Osteoporosis

The role allows for the development of a specialized interest in rheumatology.

Additionally, the postholder will oversee a rheumatology SpR and advanced practitioners while also contributing to the education of medical students.

Research Opportunities

Clinical research is facilitated at the Clinical Investigation and Research Unit (CIRU) located on the site.

A 1:6 consultant rota is in place for daytime rheumatology on-call and ward referrals, with 1 PA/week allocated for this duty.

Administrative Responsibilities

Responsibilities include:

  • Triaging referrals
  • Responding to advice and guidance inquiries
  • Homecare drug prescribing
  • Communicating with patients, general practitioners, and other hospital specialists
Compliance and Checks

This position is subject to the Rehabilitation of Offenders Act (Exceptions Order) 1975, necessitating a submission for Disclosure to the Disclosure and Barring Service to verify any previous criminal convictions.
