Job Summary

The Government Affairs Director will support the Corporate Affairs team by driving global government relations, while also contributing to the wider work of the team in corporate communications and internal communications. This role will focus on informing, uniting, and protecting the company's interests, aligning with Oxford Nanopore Technologies' key priorities to increase awareness, understanding, and collaboration with the company.

Key Responsibilities
  • Manage global government relations programs for the company, working in conjunction with the SVP Corporate Affairs and commercial teams.
  • Align with the Corporate Comms team to ensure all government affairs work is aligned and effective.
  • Support the Government Affairs team with briefings, administrative tasks, and project management.
  • Develop and coordinate plans to engage with government officials, including building relationships with key stakeholders and creating strategies to promote the company's mission and vision.
  • Work closely with regional commercial and clinical leads to stay up-to-date on their work, priorities, and opportunities, and to set global priorities for engagement that align with company objectives.
  • Be responsible for the daily management of agency support, including consultants, to ensure effective genomics policy work that aligns closely with organizational strategic priorities.
  • Ensure that external support agencies provide intelligence on government legislation, regulation, and public policy to support the global commercial teams.
  • Develop and deliver an effective influencing plan for UK government-specific work that reflects organizational priorities and leads to improved relationships, raised profile, and Oxford Nanopore Technologies being seen as a respected voice in the UK life sciences sector.
  • Support the Government Affairs delivery with project management, briefings for meetings, and general administrative tasks as needed.
  • Participate in governance exercises to ensure the company is compliant with regulations, including registration with relevant lobbying registers in the EU.
  • Support work led by legal and regulatory teams to understand and establish company positions on government regulations and communicate positions internally and externally.
  • Build network with broad internal stakeholders, including legal teams, to coordinate a company-wide approach to trade organization membership and participation, including leading Oxford Nanopore Technologies' membership of the BIA and techUK.
  • Maintain strong links with Corporate Communications teams to ensure all government affairs work is aligned and effective.
  • Understand the vision and tone of voice of Oxford Nanopore Technologies, where the customer is at the heart of our community, and we support the sharing of customer stories by customers.
  • Be responsible for maintaining a strong and close link with the Marketing team to ensure all Corporate Affairs work is aligned with marketing campaigns to maximize impact.
Requirements
  • Undergraduate degree in a science subject or demonstration of sufficient understanding of the topics that Oxford Nanopore Technologies will be engaging on.
  • Health policy experience.
  • Government/policy qualifications.
  • Proven experience in policy or government relations.
  • Experience of working in a government relations/public affairs role within a think tank/agency, government, parliamentary, financial, industry, professional, or trade body.
  • Understanding of scientific policy areas, including scientific research and healthcare.
  • Experience in a fast-paced environment, ideally within the life sciences sector.
  • Communications/policy agency background.
  • Previous experience/knowledge of working within the life science industry, knowledge of genomics preferred.
  • Understanding of broad regulatory environments in diagnostics and scientific research industries.
  • Ability to build strong relationships, collaborate with teams, and work well with cross-functional colleagues.
  • Excellent written and editing skills, able to adapt tone to audience and platform.
  • Highly organized – able to handle multiple deadlines at once.
  • An eye for design and detail.
  • Creative: ability to solve problems and generate ideas, with an understanding of the power of storytelling and relevance of information to specific target audiences, particularly in government communities.
  • Powerpoint/presentation design.
  • Adaptable to changing timelines and situations.
  • Dynamic, enthusiastic self-starter that enjoys working in a team environment.
