Private Sector Housing Specialist

About the Role

This is an exciting opportunity to join the Private Rented Housing Team at North Somerset Council. The post holder will be responsible for a variety of functions including improving housing conditions in the private rented sector, HMO licensing, Caravan Site Licensing, and unauthorized encampments.

Key Responsibilities

  • Visiting homes in the private rented sector to identify and address poor housing conditions.
  • Issuing improvement notices and prohibition orders to landlords.
  • Assessing housing conditions using the Housing Health and Safety Rating System.
  • Representing the council at court and tribunal hearings.
  • Working with landlords and tenants to resolve housing issues.

Requirements

  • A vocational qualification to at least level 4 (or equivalent) in environmental health, housing, or building construction.
  • Experience of improving poor housing conditions in the private rented sector.
  • Certified and experienced in the use of the Housing Health and Safety Rating System.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
  • A valid driving license or alternative suitable method of travel.

About You

The successful candidate will be a motivated and experienced professional with a passion for improving housing conditions. They will have excellent communication and interpersonal skills, and be able to work effectively with landlords, tenants, and other stakeholders.

Working Arrangements

This is a temporary post for 1 year, working 37 hours per week. The post holder will be required to work from the Town Hall in Weston-super-Mare or remotely, and may be required to visit homes in the private rented sector on a regular basis.
