Private Rented Housing Standards Specialist

About the Role

This is an exciting opportunity to join the Private Rented Housing Team at North Somerset Council. The post holder will be responsible for a variety of functions including improving housing conditions in the private rented sector, HMO licensing, Caravan Site Licensing, and unauthorized encampments.

The role will involve visiting homes in the private rented sector on a regular basis, which may be at short notice. The post holder will also work from the council offices or remotely, depending on the needs of the team.

This is a permanent post for 23 hours per week, with a flexible working pattern to be discussed with the successful candidate.

About You

The successful candidate will have:

  • A vocational qualification to at least level 4 (or equivalent) in environmental health, housing, or building construction.
  • Experience of improving poor housing conditions in the private rented sector using a range of enforcement options, such as improvement notices and prohibition orders.
  • Certified and experienced in the use of the Housing Health and Safety Rating System to assess housing conditions.
  • A broad knowledge of the private rented housing sector.
  • Housing construction skills with experience of inspecting dwellings to identify deficiencies and produce a technical schedule of works.
  • Excellent communication skills.
  • Ability to represent the council at court and tribunal hearings.

Essential Requirements

A valid driving license or alternative suitable method of travel is an essential condition for this role.
