Job Summary

Manchester University NHS Foundation Trust is seeking a highly motivated and enthusiastic Medical Laboratory Assistant to join our Biochemistry team at our Oxford Road Campus. As a key member of our team, you will play a vital role in supporting the delivery of our Automated and Specialist Biochemistry services.

Main Duties and Responsibilities

The successful candidate will be responsible for acting as a Medical Laboratory Assistant, supporting HCPC registered staff within the department, working under both direct and indirect supervision to perform an extensive range of automated, semi-automated and manual techniques. Accuracy and attention to detail are essential to ensure the service is safe and complies with current standards, clinical governance, health and safety and risk management policies.

You will be required to work under the supervision of Biomedical Scientists to deliver the day-to-day operation of our Automated and Specialist Biochemistry sections. This will involve working with a range of laboratory equipment and performing a variety of tasks, including processing specimens, conducting tests and maintaining accurate records.

Person Specification

The ideal candidate will have an appropriate Science NVQ level 3, HCS Apprenticeship Level 2, Certificate of Achievement Part 1 or equivalent experience and/or completed competency documentation. You will also have evidence of training and development within a relevant pathology discipline, including working knowledge of laboratory areas, including both practical and basic theoretical knowledge of the various methods employed.

Desirable qualifications include knowledge of UKAS ISO 15189 and ISO 22870, as well as experience of laboratory processes and IT systems. You will also have experience of working in a laboratory environment, with a strong understanding of laboratory health and safety procedures and protocols.
