About the Role

We are seeking a highly skilled Principal Engineer - Real Time Systems to join our team at SSE. As a key member of our Asset Management and Operations Directorate, you will play a critical role in ensuring the safe and reliable operation of our transmission network.

Key Responsibilities
  • Develop and maintain technical specifications for real-time system architectures and equipment used in our transmission network substations.
  • Work with the Technical Assurance team to ensure that all real-time system equipment types are safe, adequately tested, configured, and validated prior to approval for use on the network.
  • Collaborate with the Design Authority to verify project proposals for substation control systems and identify any scope changes required to ensure the network is adequately managed.
  • Represent SSE at industry events and standardization working groups to identify opportunities for innovation and technology advancement.
  • Provide technical consultancy services across the SSE Transmission business, encouraging the development of staff and sharing specialist expert knowledge.
Requirements
  • A degree in Electrical Engineering or a relevant engineering discipline, with Chartered Engineer status or working towards it.
  • Demonstrable experience in design, testing, and specification of control systems, including IEC61850, PTP, and Ethernet architectures.
  • Knowledge of fibre installation, serial connectivity, DNP3, and other control system protocols, as well as cybersecurity best practices and communications technologies.
  • Excellent communication skills, with the ability to communicate at all levels on technical subjects and write clear, well-structured technical reports and specifications.
  • The ability to prioritize workload and meet targets and deadlines.
