Job Title: SEMH Teaching Assistant (Secondary)

GSL Education is seeking a dedicated and compassionate SEMH Teaching Assistant to work within secondary schools in Newcastle. This role is perfect for individuals with experience supporting students with Social, Emotional, and Mental Health (SEMH) needs, who are looking to make a meaningful impact in an educational setting.

Job Summary:

As an SEMH Teaching Assistant (Secondary), you will provide essential support to students who face social, emotional, and behavioural challenges. Working closely with teaching staff, you will help students engage in learning, build their emotional resilience, and develop positive relationships within the school community.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Provide one-to-one and small group support for students with SEMH needs.
  • Assist in implementing personalised behaviour support plans and interventions.
  • Support students' social and emotional development, encouraging positive behaviour and emotional regulation.
  • Work alongside teachers to deliver tailored lessons that meet the specific needs of SEMH students.
  • Use de-escalation techniques to manage challenging behaviour in a calm and supportive manner.
  • Encourage students to build self-confidence, independence, and resilience.
  • Monitor and report on student progress, liaising with teachers, SENCOs, and other staff members.
  • Promote a safe and inclusive learning environment in line with the school's behaviour policies.
Essential Requirements:
  • Previous experience working with SEMH students in a secondary school setting.
  • Strong understanding of the challenges faced by students with SEMH needs and effective strategies to support them.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to build positive relationships with students and staff.
  • Patience, empathy, and resilience in managing challenging behaviour.
  • A valid DBS registered on the Update Service, or a willingness to apply for one.
