Overview of the Position

The Cellular Pathology Laboratory, part of the University Hospitals Sussex NHS Foundation Trust, processes a significant volume of Histology specimens, contributing to the healthcare needs of the West Sussex region.

Our department is involved in a variety of specialized tasks including Immunocytochemistry (ICC), Special Stains, Non-Gynae Diagnostic Cytology, OSNA (Intra-operative Breast Sentinel Node testing), and Digital Pathology. The main laboratory operates during standard business hours, ensuring efficient service delivery.

Key Responsibilities

The role encompasses several critical functions such as:

  1. Managing specimen reception and logging samples into the IT system, necessitating strong literacy, numeracy, and IT capabilities.
  2. Assisting Biomedical Scientists and Consultants in the dissection area, which includes handling biological tissues and fluids.
  3. Supporting various departmental tasks, including the transport of reagents and waste management.
  4. Conducting block and slide filing and retrieval, along with maintaining a clean and organized workspace.

Detailed Responsibilities and Expectations

1. Engage in routine Cellular Pathology tasks, including specimen booking and reception, assisting in dissection, quality control, and general housekeeping duties.

2. Execute block and slide filing with precision.

3. Perform basic maintenance of laboratory instruments after receiving appropriate training.

4. Adhere to strict quality and safety standards in all laboratory activities.

5. Demonstrate proficient computer skills, particularly in data entry and management.

Candidate Profile

Required Qualifications and Skills

Essential Criteria

  • NVQ2 or equivalent qualification.
  • Proficient in Numeracy and English, ideally with GCSE Grade C or higher.
  • Strong computer skills, particularly in Windows-based applications.
  • Ability to maintain a safe working environment within the laboratory.
  • Proven teamwork capabilities.
  • Effective communication skills, both written and verbal.
  • Demonstrated commitment to the Trust's vision of compassionate care.

Desirable Criteria

  • GCSE Maths and English minimum Grade C or equivalent.
