Position Overview

University Hospitals Sussex NHS Foundation Trust is pleased to announce an opening for a full-time (or part-time) Senior Haematology Consultant. This role involves collaboration with a dedicated team of five Haematologists, primarily located in a picturesque area of West Sussex.

We seek a passionate and proactive individual to join our cohesive team, contributing to the advancement of our Haematology services.

Departmental Insights

The Haematology department is committed to delivering comprehensive haemato-oncology services, alongside general haematology, including obstetrics, paediatrics, and transfusion medicine. We are recognized as a UKHCDO accredited Haemophilia Centre.

This role presents an exciting opportunity to engage in the development of a clinically driven, integrated Haematology Service across the South Coast, with ample support for pursuing specialized interests. We offer flexible working arrangements, potential for cross-site collaboration, and a manageable on-call rota.

Key Responsibilities

The successful candidate will be responsible for:

  • Delivering comprehensive clinical care for patients with blood disorders and providing inpatient management for those with haematological malignancies.
  • Offering expert guidance to colleagues on various aspects of Haematology within the trust and in primary care settings.
  • Providing clinical oversight to the Haematology Laboratory.
  • Actively participating in departmental meetings, clinical governance, and educational initiatives for junior staff.
  • Engaging in our extensive Haematology trials portfolio.

Job Responsibilities

The appointee will be expected to:

  • Fulfill all responsibilities associated with the role of a Senior Haematology Consultant, including inpatient care for haematology patients.
  • Attend clinics for both new and follow-up patients, participate in multidisciplinary team meetings, and engage in audit and guideline development.
  • Complete patient-related administrative tasks promptly, including bone marrow and blood film reporting.
  • Support junior staff in procedures such as bone marrow aspiration and biopsy.
  • Provide consultative advice to healthcare professionals in both hospital and primary care environments.

Our trials department is highly active, consistently ranking among the top recruiters for national trials. Current trials include AML18, REMoDL-A, Flair, RADAR, Fitness, Mithridate, and Victor.

The appointee will be expected to participate in clinical trials and uphold high standards of clinical practice. The Trust has a dedicated Research Support team, and we encourage involvement in research and development initiatives.

Continuous professional development is essential, and the appointee will be expected to attend annual appraisals and revalidation.

As a Senior Haematology Consultant, leadership within the department is expected, championing departmental and organizational goals.

The Trust conducts monthly clinical governance sessions, featuring presentations from various departments, and both hospitals maintain individual multidisciplinary teams and regular educational sessions. Participation in journal clubs and other educational meetings is encouraged.

Qualifications and Experience

Essential:

  • Basic medical degree.
  • Postgraduate qualification or appropriate specialist qualification.
  • Full GMC Registration with a license to practice.
  • CCT in Specialty or equivalent.
  • Entry onto the GMC Specialist Register or eligibility for entry within six months.

Desirable:

  • Higher degree.

Clinical Skills & Experience

Essential:

  • Understanding of clinical risk management.
  • Strong communication skills with patients and staff.
  • Broad haematological experience, including haemato-oncology, general haematology, haemostasis, thrombosis, transfusion medicine, and laboratory expertise.
  • Proficiency in obtaining and reporting bone marrow aspirate and trephine samples.
  • Expertise in safe administration of intrathecal chemotherapy.

  • Emerging specialist interest.

  • Breadth of experience in and outside specialty.

  • Experience working in multi-professional teams.
  • Understanding of NHS/Clinical governance/resource constraints.
