Our organization operates on a year-round residential basis, catering to children and young people aged 5 to 18 years. Nestled within a stunning thirty-five-acre estate, our facilities include residential and educational accommodations, mature woodlands, community gardens, orchards, wildlife habitats, and play areas for children. We are currently looking for a Cook (Homemaker) to become a vital part of our Catering and Domestic team on a part-time (0.93 FTE) employed basis. The successful candidate will play a crucial role in ensuring that children and young people experience a homely environment, which includes preparing high-quality and nutritious meals.

As a Homemaker, you will be expected to consistently deliver excellent and nutritious lunches and dinners for our children. You will appreciate the significance of outstanding food preparation in fostering a welcoming atmosphere within the residential setting. Additionally, you will be responsible for some domestic tasks and maintaining a high standard of cleanliness. An elementary food hygiene certificate, or a higher qualification, is a mandatory requirement. While a formal qualification in cooking or food preparation is highly desirable, we are willing to provide training for the right candidate.

The successful applicant will work 32.5 hours per week, excluding meal breaks, from Monday to Friday, 11 am - 6 pm. There may also be opportunities for additional shifts. The salary for this position is £22,708 per annum (£13.44 per hour), calculated based on a full-time equivalent salary of £24,455. All successful candidates will be required to join Disclosure Scotland's Protecting Vulnerable Groups (PVG) Scheme.

Key ResponsibilitiesPrincipal Duties:
  1. Foster a positive environment in line with Harmeny's vision, purpose, and core values.
  2. Assist the Catering and Domestic Services Manager in implementing management decisions, cottage development plans, and organizational policies.
  3. Prepare and serve meals and snacks according to the menu established with the Catering and Domestic Services Manager, adhering to Harmeny's Healthy Eating Guidelines and the dietary needs of the children.
  4. Ensure food safety during storage, preparation, and cooking, conducting routine daily checks, including temperature control.
  5. Manage waste effectively during food preparation and cooking.
  6. Maintain a high standard of hygiene in the kitchen and communal areas.
  7. Keep a stock of food and cleaning supplies in each cottage kitchen.
  8. Ensure all kitchen equipment is in proper working order and communicate any repair or replacement needs to the appropriate managers.
  9. Complete tasks in accordance with health and safety practices, reporting any incidents or damages immediately.
  10. Engage children in food preparation and cleaning tasks as per their individual plans and risk assessments.
  11. Perform general domestic duties such as dusting, polishing, and laundry.
  12. Collaborate with colleagues, including senior staff and cleaning operatives, to maintain a homely environment for the children.
  13. Participate in regular staff and children's meetings to gather feedback from service users.
  14. Attend supervision, training, and other required meetings.
  15. Carry out any additional duties as assigned by the Catering and Domestic Services Manager or Senior Management Team that align with the Homemaker role.
  16. Be available for absence cover as needed.
Skills, Knowledge, Qualifications, and ExperienceEssential:
  1. Elementary food hygiene certificate or higher.
  2. Experience in meal preparation.
  3. Knowledge of food hygiene and storage guidelines.
  4. Proven ability to deliver a catering service that meets high standards of food quality and nutrition, alongside a commitment to cleanliness and hygiene.
  5. Ability to work effectively as part of a team and supportively with colleagues.
  6. Organizational skills and the ability to act independently when unexpected challenges arise.
  7. Understanding of the needs of children.
Desirable:
  1. Formal qualification in cooking or food preparation.
  2. Health and Safety certification, including knowledge of COSHH regulations.
  3. First Aid certification.
  4. Awareness of child protection and safeguarding procedures.
  5. Understanding of the needs of children who are looked after and those with complex additional support needs.
  6. Experience in a residential setting within a multidisciplinary team.
