Position Overview

The Lead Infection Control Specialist will play a pivotal role within the Infection Prevention and Control Team, tasked with advancing the organization's IPC initiatives and ensuring compliance with essential IPC regulations as dictated by strategic objectives and national guidelines.

This role involves delivering a comprehensive suite of expert, evidence-based Infection Prevention and Control (IPC) services to the Welsh Ambulance Service (WAST). Responsibilities include offering specialized IPC counsel, conducting training and educational sessions, performing audits, engaging in surveillance activities, and providing clinical support.

The individual in this position will be recognized as a clinical authority in infection prevention and control, offering specialized guidance to assist staff within the Welsh Ambulance Service NHS Trust in addressing patient needs related to minimizing the risk of Health Care Associated Infections (HCAIs) during their engagement with the Trust's services, particularly in the context of pre-hospital care.

The role demands a high clinical profile, ensuring the delivery of effective and efficient care. At this level, the incumbent is expected to function as a highly skilled Senior Practitioner with extensive expertise.

Key Responsibilities

  • Foster and sustain proactive relationships with both internal and external stakeholders.
  • Provide expert guidance on managing infectious agents and high-consequence infectious diseases, ensuring that IPC best practices are integrated throughout the organization.
  • Lead and provide national-level advice on IPC standards, policies, and procedures, supporting the Head of Infection Prevention and Control in promoting best practices across the organization.
  • Collaborate with the Occupational Health Department to offer expert advice on IPC-related outbreaks and support operational managers and teams.
  • Champion a culture that prioritizes IPC practices, enhancing staff engagement and promoting awareness of Safe, Clean Care.
  • Oversee the monitoring of clinical surveillance related to IPC, including data collection, analysis, and interpretation to inform planning and improvement initiatives.
  • Ensure personal IPC knowledge remains current, meeting the expectations of an expert practitioner.
  • Manage band 5/6 staff in accordance with relevant policies and procedures.
