Position Overview

This role presents a unique opportunity for individuals passionate about bowel cancer and seeking to enhance their nursing expertise. The South West London Bowel Cancer Screening Centre is in search of a Band 6 Specialist Screening Practitioner (SSP) to join the Bowel Cancer Screening Programme (BCSP).

The Bowel Cancer Screening Programme is on a path of continuous growth, introducing new challenges and exciting developments. The Specialist Screening Practitioner will play a crucial role in delivering independent care to participants in the Bowel Cancer Screening Programme, providing essential guidance, support, and clinical expertise throughout the patients' journey.

Key Responsibilities

  • Collaborate with experienced Specialist Screening Practitioners (SSPs) and Assistant Screening & Pre-Admission Practitioners (ASPPs) to support all facets of the Bowel Cancer Screening Programme.
  • Possess a minimum of three years of post-registration experience, ideally with a background in Endoscopy or lower gastrointestinal nursing.
  • Offer advice, information, and support to individuals contacting the screening centre, ensuring comprehensive care delivery to patients identified by the screening programme.
  • Facilitate assessments for patients to determine their fitness for screening colonoscopy or alternative diagnostic procedures.
  • Empower patients to make informed decisions prior to undergoing screening colonoscopy or alternative diagnostic interventions.
  • Ensure timely access to colonoscopy or alternative diagnostic interventions, promoting seamless transitions across primary, secondary, and tertiary care settings.
  • Establish effective connections with local multidisciplinary teams to guarantee prompt presentation and transfer of patients when cancer is detected.
  • Maintain accurate patient records for screening services, documenting treatment, outcomes, and staging as provided by the multidisciplinary team.

Qualifications and Skills

Essential:

  • Registered Health Care Professional.
  • Demonstrated ability to organize and prioritize workload effectively.
  • Proficient in patient examination and history taking.
  • Strong presentation and IT skills.
  • Evidence of ongoing professional development.

Desirable:

  • Degree in a relevant field.
  • Experience in managing a caseload or care group within a clinical setting.
  • Familiarity with lower gastrointestinal diseases and GI cancer progression.
