Special Educational Needs Instructor

Dawlish, Devon, United Kingdom Phoenix Learning & Care Group Full time

Job Title: Special Educational Needs Instructor

Job Location: Phoenix Learning & Care Group

Salary: Competitive salary based on experience and qualifications.

Contract Type: Permanent

At Phoenix Learning & Care Group, we believe in the fundamental right of every individual to receive a meaningful education. As a Special Educational Needs Instructor, you will play a crucial role in ensuring that neurodiverse young adults (aged 16 to 25) are provided with exceptional educational opportunities.

Our educational framework is not solely focused on qualifications; rather, it is designed around a comprehensive Post 16 Study Programme model. This includes a tailored learning experience, practical work placements, essential skills in mathematics and English, and various enriching activities that prepare our learners for adulthood. Many of our students may face social and emotional challenges, making it essential to foster life skills, communication abilities, and emotional expression through a curriculum that affirms neurodiversity. You will thrive in our inclusive communication environment.

We are committed to equipping you with the necessary training and support to ensure our learners have an enriching experience. This includes opportunities for curriculum development and collaboration with our integrated therapies team to enhance learner support.

With class sizes ranging from 5 to 7 learners, you will have the opportunity to build meaningful relationships with the individuals you support.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Lead classroom activities, including planning, instruction, and assessment, particularly for your designated class. This will encompass a variety of subjects and topics related to pathways to adulthood and pastoral care.
  • Monitor and document progress, both academically and in relation to Education, Health and Care Plan (EHCP) outcomes.
  • Engage closely with learners, inspiring and motivating them to achieve their fullest potential.
  • Provide innovative learning experiences, whether in the classroom or within the community. You will work one-on-one with learners or in small groups to help them reach their educational goals.
  • Collaborate effectively with Learning Support Assistants to ensure they provide optimal support to learners.
  • Develop and adapt a personalized curriculum for each learner. Flexibility in your teaching approach is essential, as some learners may focus on gaining independence, while others may aim for employment.
  • Identify when a learner's progress may be at risk and seek to understand their individual needs for improvement.

Qualifications and Skills:

  • Patience, empathy, and resilience—supporting neurodiverse learners requires understanding their unique learning behaviors and communication needs.
  • Strong communication skills—essential for interacting with a diverse range of individuals, including learners, parents, and other stakeholders. You will need to contribute to various resources and share information effectively.
  • Involvement in EHCPs and the ability to shape a curriculum based on individual learner outcomes.
  • Flexibility and adaptability—being prepared for unexpected changes is crucial in this role.
  • A genuine passion for educating individuals with diverse needs.

Benefits:

  • Holidays: Work during term time with paid annual leave covering non-working weeks.
  • Pension Scheme: Contribute 5% with an additional 3% from the employer.
  • Professional Development: Access to comprehensive learning and development opportunities.
  • Employee Discounts: Enjoy various discounts through our employee benefits platform.
  • Wellbeing Support: Prioritizing your wellbeing with access to mental health resources and support.
  • Cycle2Work Scheme: Opportunity to purchase a bicycle at a discounted rate.
  • DBS Coverage: We will cover the cost of your enhanced DBS check.

After completing 12 months of service, you will also be eligible for our Medicash scheme, which covers a wide range of health and wellbeing expenses. Additionally, you will receive life assurance equivalent to twice your annual salary and access to further discounts.

Please note that as part of our commitment to safer recruitment, successful candidates will undergo pre-employment checks, including an enhanced DBS check and reference validation.

At Phoenix Learning & Care Group, we take pride in our diverse workforce and strive to create an inclusive environment for all team members. We are dedicated to ensuring that our teams can express their authentic selves at work without fear of discrimination.
