About the Role

We are seeking a highly motivated and enthusiastic Coastal Engineering Apprentice to join our team at AECOM. As a Coastal Engineering Apprentice, you will have the opportunity to work on a wide range of projects, from coastal policy and management to design and engineering.

Key Responsibilities
  • Develop and implement coastal management studies, including Shoreline Management Plans (SMPs), strategies, and Statements of Appropriate Assessment (StARs/OBCs) using current Defra and EA Flood and Coastal Erosion Risk Management (FCERM) guidance.
  • Conduct coastal hydrodynamic and flood modeling using the MIKE software suite.
  • Perform overtopping assessments using the Eurotop manual.
  • Conduct inspections, feasibility studies, and detailed design for coast protection and sea defense structures, such as revetments, rock armor, breakwaters, and embankments.
  • Design maritime structures, including quay walls, jetties, flood walls, pontoons, mooring dolphins, piers, berthing structures, steel sheet piling, lock and dock gates.
  • Develop economic appraisals and five-case model business cases.
  • Conduct wider benefit assessments, carbon, and sustainability assessments in the coastal environment.
  • Provide coastal and marine input to Environmental Impact Assessments (EIAs).

Requirements

To be considered for this role, you will need:

  • A minimum of 5 GCSEs (or equivalent) at grade 'C/4' or above, including Mathematics and English.
  • Three A-Levels (or equivalent) including Maths and a physical science at grade 'C' or above.
  • Some work experience or shadowing in an engineering environment would be an advantage.
  • Demonstrate an interest and desire to pursue a career in coastal engineering.
  • Show an aptitude towards software-based engineering and drawing, such as Computer-Aided Design (CAD) and other similar 3D software.
  • Commitment to continued education and improvement through on-the-job learning and training opportunities.
  • Creative, practical, adaptable, and enthusiastic.
  • Ability to demonstrate attention to detail.
  • Ability to think in a methodical way to design, plan, and organize parts of projects.
  • English language proficient, holding excellent communication skills to present information in speech, drawings, and reports.
