Position Overview

This role involves training as a sonography specialist within the Northumbria Healthcare NHS Foundation Trust, aimed at achieving a postgraduate certificate in Medical Ultrasound. The successful candidate will evolve into an independent practitioner, significantly contributing to the sonographer-led service.

The individual will manage a clinical caseload as designated by the Trust, with the exception of the most intricate procedures, which will be performed by medical professionals. The role includes overseeing the patient journey related to specific referrals, delivering detailed reports of findings, and ensuring effective communication with relevant healthcare providers.

Training Framework

The provisions of the Agenda for Change Annex 21 regarding pay and banding for trainees will be applicable during the training period.

Duration of Training

The training period is structured as follows:

  • More than 3 years post-training completion: 60% of the pay band maximum for the qualified rate
  • More than 2 but less than 3 years prior to completion: 65% of the pay band maximum for the qualified rate
  • More than 1 but less than 2 years prior to completion: 70% of the pay band maximum for the qualified rate
  • Up to 12 months before completion: 75% of the pay band maximum for the qualified rate

Key Responsibilities

The incumbent will:

  • Operate as a trainee sonographer within the Northumbria Healthcare NHS Foundation Trust, working towards the postgraduate certificate in Medical Ultrasound and becoming an independent practitioner with minimal oversight from consultant medical staff.
  • Progressively manage the clinical caseload of the Trust, excluding the most complex interventions.
  • With guidance, oversee the patient pathway linked to specific referrals, providing comprehensive reports of findings and ensuring effective communication with appropriate clinicians.
  • Assume responsibility for the archiving of images and the management of electronic data generated during procedures.
  • Communicate sensitive and unexpected information to patients with empathy, respect, and professionalism.

The role also involves:

  • Developing a robust knowledge base for professional expertise and engaging in external consultations.
  • Collaborating within a multidisciplinary team to enhance service delivery.
  • Ensuring the quality assurance of technical equipment and its safe operation for patient use.
  • Demonstrating compassionate and inclusive leadership to foster a culture of collective leadership within the Trust.
