The Surgical Support Assistant plays a vital role in ensuring the efficient operation of our Recovery department, contributing to the delivery of high-quality patient care in a safe and hygienic environment.
As a key member of the surgical team, you will collaborate with Recovery staff, assisting in the organization and sanitation of equipment within the Recovery area.
A flexible and supportive approach to service delivery is essential, as you will be involved in the movement of both clean and soiled equipment throughout the surgical complex.
In return, we provide comprehensive in-house training and foster a welcoming and supportive atmosphere within one of the largest and most esteemed Trusts in the region.
To equip you with the necessary knowledge and skills for delivering safe and compassionate care, you will be required to complete the Health Care Assistant Apprenticeship Pathway. This includes the Care Certificate, a nationally recognized training framework from Skills for Health, which outlines the standards for care in the UK and is applicable to all new staff entering the care sector.
Key Responsibilities
As a member of the recovery team, you will provide essential support, directly contributing to the safe and effective care of patients in the operating theatres.
Your responsibilities will include:
- Maintaining and cleaning the recovery environment in accordance with Trust policies and infection control standards.
- Assisting in patient care under the supervision of qualified theatre personnel.
- Supporting the recovery practitioner by providing assistance during procedures.
- Being prepared to stand for extended periods, potentially exceeding one hour.
- Performing manual handling tasks that may require significant physical effort, including positioning patients and moving equipment.
- Demonstrating high levels of concentration and adaptability in response to unforeseen circumstances during patient recovery.

Job Responsibilities
You will be accountable for ensuring that the recovery environment is maintained and sanitized according to Trust policies, while also meeting departmental and infection control standards. You will assist qualified staff by performing a variety of support tasks under the guidance of the recovery practitioner in charge.
Participation in departmental HCIA audits is expected, ensuring that service requirements for maintaining a clean environment are fulfilled and cleaning schedules are adhered to.

Qualifications & Experience

- Prior experience in customer service or public interaction.

- Demonstrable literacy and numeracy skills equivalent to Level 1/Grade D/Grade 3 or above.

- GCSEs in Maths and English at grade C/4 or above, or Functional/Key Skills Level 2 in Maths and English.
