Job Summary

We are seeking an experienced Senior Specialist Biomedical Scientist to join our Blood Transfusion Laboratory team at University Hospitals Sussex NHS Foundation Trust. As a key member of our team, you will be responsible for the daily management and quality of the Blood Transfusion department, ensuring a high-quality service is provided to our patients.

Main Responsibilities
  • Manage and supervise Biomedical Scientists, trainees, and medical laboratory assistants, providing guidance and training to ensure the smooth operation of the department.
  • Ensure compliance with British Standards Quality Requirements (BSQR) and maintain high-quality standards in the Blood Transfusion department.
  • Communicate effectively with the team, Lead Biomedical Scientists, and other stakeholders to ensure the efficient running of the service.
  • Participate in team meetings, taking the lead as necessary, and contribute to the development of departmental policies and procedures.
  • Support the Lead Biomedical Scientists in ensuring high-quality standards and the smooth running of the department.
  • Conduct and coordinate departmental technical meetings, as required, and minute these meetings for future reference.
  • Attend and address meetings outside of the department, as necessary, to ensure effective communication and collaboration.
  • Plan and prioritize the work of allocated sections to ensure timely reporting of results and deputize for the absence of other Senior Specialist Biomedical Scientists.
Person Specification
  • Essential:
    • HCPC Registration
    • Band 6 working experience in Haematology/Blood Transfusion
    • NHS experience
    • Quality qualification
    • FIBMS or relevant MSc
  • Desirable:
    • Evidence of Continuing Professional Development (CPD)
    • Management qualification
Skills and Qualifications
  • Essential:
    • Experience working within a Blood Transfusion department
    • Troubleshooting of equipment and results
    • Use of Laboratory Information Management Systems (LIMS)
    • Experience in training other staff
  • Desirable:
    • Roster use
    • IPR training
    • Staff management, e.g., capability
Quality and Equality
  • Essential:
    • Use of Q-Pulse
    • SOPs written
    • Evidence of knowledge of UKAS
    • Evidence of BSQR
  • Desirable:
    • BBTS qualification
