Safety Assurance Engineer

Alstom is seeking a highly skilled Safety Assurance Engineer to join our team in the UK. As a key member of our Safety Assurance team, you will be responsible for ensuring that our products and systems meet the highest safety standards.

About the Role

  • Support our client's requirements to meet Interoperability and Common Safety Method for Risk Evaluation and Assessment (CSM-REA).
  • Engineering Safety Management of product introduction and application project/scheme delivery for Alstom SS&I.
  • Ensure Alstom SS&I UK product introduction activities and application projects meet all applicable legislative and guidance requirements for Engineering Safety Management, Safety Assurance, Product Acceptance and Homologation.
  • Comply with the Alstom Safety Instruction and Safety Assessment Process.
  • Manage, perform and ensure the activities related to safety assurance are applied in the Projects and Programs (products and systems).
  • Perform the role of Safety Assurance Manager (SAM) on 'standard' application projects/schemes or product introductions or provide support to the SAM on a large or complex project.
  • Implement an Engineering Safety Management Lifecycle for product introduction and large or complex project applications' compliance with the Common Safety Method for Risk Evaluation and Assessment and CENELEC Standards.
  • Develop Safety Plans and apply safety assurance methodologies (risk acceptance criteria, safety analysis, verification and validation) defined for the project/system/product.
  • Conduct project hazard analysis/Safety Risk Activities (including chairing Hazard Identification activities).
  • Review RAM, VV&T, T&C activities from a Safety perspective.
  • Organize and attend periodic Safety Reviews.
  • Develop safety cases/safety justification reports.
  • Present Safety Case arguments to internal (QS, Safety Assessor) and external (ISA) assessors.
  • Plan and prioritize Safety Assurance activities to meet project and product approval deadlines, including the ability to respond effectively to change.
  • Manage Work Packages for SAM and Safety Assurance activities on projects and product introductions.
  • Provide advice on Safety Assurance to project teams regarding issues that may prevent a project from meeting its safety requirements for commissioning or achieving safety acceptance.
  • Engage in engineering safety management liaison at all levels within Alstom SS&I and externally with customers, appropriate Assessment Bodies, other parts of Alstom globally, as well as subcontractors and suppliers.
  • Prepare Safety Assurance inputs for Tenders and Tender evaluation.
  • Act on behalf of the Alstom UK RCSM or SAM for project and product introduction activities.
  • Provide Key Project Indicators for activities as required at Regional Centre or project level.
  • Develop and mentor other members of the Safety Assurance Team.

Requirements

  • Educated to HND or equivalent in an engineering related subject.
  • Accredited (by Alstom) as an Expert in Safety Assurance.
  • Accreditation of successful completion of Training in the Common Safety Method for Risk Evaluation and Assessment.
  • Accredited (by Alstom) as a Senior Expert in Safety Assurance.

Additional Requirements:

  • Understanding and practical application of conventional UK signalling application projects.
  • Practical Railway industry experience in safety engineering or safety assurance and systems engineering.
  • Practical understanding and application of the Common Safety Method for Risk Evaluation and Assessment and associated procedures.
  • Experience in Safety or Software auditing.
  • Demonstrable ability and history of interfacing with the UK railway industry/safety leaders in a competent professional manner, whilst maintaining safety and commercial interests.
  • Good interpersonal and communication skills (in written and spoken English).
