Role Responsibilities:

This role presents a unique opportunity to spearhead Uswitch's reputation and authority in a crucial sector affecting household expenses - energy. You will join our award-winning team, recognized for excellence in public relations, dedicated to achieving extensive media coverage and influencing key policymakers.

As UK households navigate a challenging economic landscape, it is our duty to enhance our efforts to support consumers.

You will advocate for transformative changes within the energy sector and empower consumers to manage their household expenses effectively.

This position is ideal for a seasoned public relations professional with a comprehensive understanding of the national media landscape, ready to take charge of our consumer-centric energy initiatives.

Key Responsibilities:

Campaign Management: Strategizing and executing campaigns that align with commercial, policy, or brand marketing goals. Identifying innovative methods to engage target audiences, including collaborations with influencers. Coordinating with product and commercial teams to ensure alignment with business objectives.

Content Strategy: Securing prominent media coverage to bolster our energy messaging, including fixed deals, household energy savings, and policy priorities. Overseeing internal data and external consumer research, crafting high-quality press releases, and maintaining an updated story pipeline shared with broader marketing teams. Collaborating closely with our Digital Earned Media and organic social media teams to ensure cohesive activity.

Press Office Management: Delivering an exceptional press office experience, responding to inquiries during and outside of office hours (typically only a few times monthly) and managing our media center. Effectively representing the PR team to both internal and external stakeholders, including organizing spokesperson briefings and coordinating high-profile media interviews.

News Monitoring: Keeping abreast of industry developments and daily news to pinpoint opportunities for expert commentary that stands out in a competitive media landscape.

Media Relations: Cultivating, nurturing, and maximizing strong relationships with consumer affairs, energy, personal finance, lifestyle, trade, and broadcast media, as well as other key industry influencers, including business partners.

Regulatory Support: Collaborating with the policy and regulation team to provide public relations support for our public affairs initiatives.

Spokesperson Management: Overseeing, mentoring, and training spokespersons while coordinating their schedules for media interviews and appearances.

Agency Coordination: Acting as the primary contact for our Energy PR agency, ensuring we derive maximum value from our external partnerships.

Reporting and Analysis: Documenting all incoming media coverage and evaluating it against competitors, managing relationships with news monitoring services, and reporting on outcomes.

Ideal Candidate Profile:

  • Proven experience in consumer public relations, particularly in relevant sectors (energy, utilities, personal finance), with outstanding communication skills. A proactive self-starter with a track record of developing and leading consumer campaigns that yield significant results with minimal oversight.
  • Ability to comprehend our policy objectives and effectively convey them through public relations messaging, transforming policy positions into compelling media narratives. Capable of simplifying complex topics into consumer-friendly language.
  • Skilled in prioritizing tasks and making strategic decisions, including assessing whether a reactive media moment serves the best interests of consumers while balancing commercial and policy objectives.
  • Proficient in leveraging reactive media opportunities and delivering timely, newsworthy commentary, along with creative thinking for proactive campaigns.
  • Strong writing abilities - capable of articulating messages in an engaging manner with meticulous attention to detail. Comfortable working with insights, data, and third-party consumer research to enhance our storytelling.
