Job Summary

This role is part of the Marine Management Organisation's legal team, responsible for providing expert legal advice and drafting services to support the organisation's regulatory functions. The successful candidate will work closely with the Marine Licensing Team, Marine Conservation Team, and other stakeholders to ensure that the MMO performs its statutory functions independently, lawfully, and efficiently.

Key Responsibilities

  • Provide legal advice to the Marine Licensing Team on marine licensing applications and development consent orders for nationally significant infrastructure projects.
  • Assist the Marine Conservation Team with legal and drafting advice on the drafting of MMO Byelaws and byelaws to be made by Inshore Fisheries Conservation Authorities.
  • Support the Harbours Team with legal and drafting advice on the making of Harbour Revision Orders and Works Orders under the Harbours Act 1964.
  • Contribute to the MMO's legal team, providing bespoke, robust, innovative legal advice, training, and advocacy services across all areas of the MMO's business.

Requirements

  • Significant experience of advisory work in a regulatory setting.
  • Significant experience in legislative drafting, experience working with the SI template/Lawmaker and drafting to government legal drafting standards.
  • Significant experience in public and administrative law.
  • Ability to analyse complex legal issues and identify risks to the organisation.
  • Intellectually confident, able to handle considerable complexity and document-heavy matters.
  • Excellent communication skills and the ability to explain and present issues in clear, structured, and objective ways.
  • A strong team player with the ability to develop a positive, supportive, and inclusive culture.

Qualifications

You will be qualified to practice as a barrister or solicitor in England and Wales. Applicants qualified in a jurisdiction outside England and Wales will be expected to have completed the Qualified Lawyers Transfer Test. You will hold a current Practising Certificate.
