This position is based at our offices, where you will be part of a team that supports the Marine Management Organisation's regulatory functions.

Job Description

Location: Our offices are located in various locations, including Newcastle, York, Bristol, and Preston.

The Marine Management Organisation is the independent regulator for England's seas, driven by the government's aim for clean, healthy, safe, productive, and biologically diverse oceans and seas. Our purpose is to protect and enhance our precious marine environment and support UK economic growth by enabling sustainable marine activities.

We are recruiting for 2 Advisory & Drafting Lawyers to join our legal team. As an Advisory and Drafting Lawyer, you will lead on the legislative drafting undertaken within the MMO and provide legal advice across all areas of the MMO's business.

Key Responsibilities

  • Provide legal advice to the Marine Licensing Team on marine licensing applications and development consent orders for nationally significant infrastructure projects such as offshore wind developments.
  • Provide legal advice to the Marine Conservation Team on Wildlife Licences and European Protected Species Licences.
  • Provide legal and drafting advice to the Marine Conservation Team on the drafting of MMO Byelaws.
  • Provide legal and drafting advice to the Marine Conservation Team on the drafting of byelaws to be made by Inshore Fisheries Conservation Authorities.
  • Provide legal and drafting advice to the Harbours Team on the making of Harbour Revision Orders and Works Orders under the Harbours Act 1964.
  • Provide legal advice to the MMO across its broad portfolio of functions.

Requirements

  • Significant experience of advisory work in a regulatory setting.
  • Significant experience in legislative drafting, experience working with the SI template/Lawmaker and drafting to government legal drafting standards.
  • Significant experience in public and administrative law.
  • Ability to analyse complex legal issues and identify risks to the organisation.
  • Intellectually confident, able to handle considerable complexity and document heavy matters.
  • Excellent communication skills and the ability to explain and present issues in clear, structured, and objective ways.
  • An ability to work quickly and under pressure while remaining calm and focussed.
  • A strong team player with the ability to develop a positive, supportive, and inclusive culture.

Qualifications

You will be qualified to practice as a barrister or solicitor in England and Wales. Applicants qualified in a jurisdiction outside England and Wales will be expected to have completed the Qualified Lawyers Transfer Test. You will hold a current Practising Certificate.
