SEMH Teaching Assistant Opportunity

GSL Education's South Yorkshire branch is seeking a dedicated and compassionate SEMH Teaching Assistant to join our client schools in Wakefield. This is an exciting opportunity for individuals passionate about supporting students with Social, Emotional, and Mental Health (SEMH) needs, helping them to thrive both academically and personally.

Job Summary:

As an SEMH Teaching Assistant, you will play a crucial role in supporting students with SEMH challenges, enabling them to engage with their education in a meaningful way. You will work closely with students on a one-to-one basis or in small groups, providing tailored support that fosters both academic progress and emotional well-being.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Provide one-to-one or small group support for students with Social, Emotional, and Mental Health (SEMH) needs, focusing on both academic and emotional development.
  • Assist in developing and implementing personalised learning plans and behaviour strategies.
  • Build strong, trusting relationships with students to support emotional regulation and encourage positive social interactions.
  • Monitor student progress, providing feedback to teachers and contributing to intervention plans where necessary.
  • Support class teachers in managing classroom dynamics, promoting a safe and supportive learning environment.
  • Encourage positive behaviour through guidance and reinforcement, helping students manage their emotions effectively.
  • Work collaboratively with the SENCO and other staff members to ensure consistency in supporting students' needs.

Essential Requirements:

  • Experience working with children or young people with SEMH needs, ideally within an educational setting.
  • Strong understanding of SEMH challenges and behaviour management strategies.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to build rapport with students and staff.
  • Patience, resilience, and a proactive approach to managing challenging situations.
  • A passion for helping students overcome barriers to learning and achieve their potential.
  • Ability to work both independently and as part of a team, supporting the wider school community.
  • A valid DBS registered on the Update Service, or a willingness to apply for one.
