Salary: £67-87 per hour DOE (Inside IR35)

Our client, a local authority in West Yorkshire, is seeking an experienced Interim Principal Engineer - Traffic & Road Safety. This role involves providing effective management and leadership to a team of traffic engineering and road safety specialists. You will oversee the feasibility, design, procurement, and construction of a range of traffic and road safety projects, ensuring compliance with Council policies, budget provisions, and relevant legislation.

Key Responsibilities
  • Provide strategic and technical direction for traffic engineering and road safety issues in West Yorkshire, aligning with the West Yorkshire Local Transport Plan, Council Policy objectives, and local needs.
  • Lead and manage a team of traffic engineering specialists in the delivery of various traffic management and highway safety projects, ensuring effective coordination with internal and external stakeholders.
  • Develop and implement safer roads programmes, conducting collision investigation studies and determining appropriate remedial actions.
  • Support and advise the Assistant Director (Planning, Transportation & Highways), elected Members, and the Council's Management Team on traffic and road safety matters, promoting corporate leadership and strategic direction.
  • Lead the planning, design, procurement, and delivery of traffic engineering and road safety projects, ensuring adherence to project timelines, budgets, and Council guidelines.
  • Provide project briefs for consultants, manage financial aspects of capital work programmes, and ensure effective financial forecasting and budget monitoring.
Essential Qualifications and Experience
  • Bachelor of Engineering Degree (B.Eng) or Bachelor of Science (B.Sc) Degree in Civil Engineering or related discipline.
  • Minimum Incorporated Engineer (I.Eng MICE) or equivalent status.
  • Proven experience in delivering a range of traffic engineering and road safety projects of varying sizes and complexity.
  • Strong background in traffic regulation orders and active travel projects.
  • Financial management experience in capital work programmes, including budget setting, expenditure forecasting, and complex budget monitoring.
  • Demonstrated ability to lead and manage professional engineering teams, as well as training professionals.
